Really like his personality and his attitude. And who his HS quarterback was took me by surprise.

Terry was on campus January 20 for the Texas Junior Day where the Longhorns offered and officially entered the race for his recruitment.

Texas A&M hosted Terry for an unofficial at the end of January as well. Terry mentioned TCU and Texas Tech as other programs that were high on his list following his trip to Texas in January.

Hitchcock (Texas) High 2025 wide receiver and OnTexasFootball 4-star Kelshaun Johnson has locked in two official visit dates, and a third date could follow soon. 

Johnson, 5-11 and 165, told OnTexasFootball that he has official visits locked in for Penn State May 31-June 2 and Texas Tech June 7-9. The Nittany Lions have been all in on the Houston area speedy playmaker since offering June 21, 2023. That includes multiple FaceTime calls with head coach James Franklin. Texas Tech is leaning on teammate and good friend Lloyd Jones. Jones, 6-3, 210, committed to the Red Raiders November 4, 2023. 

Johnson told OnTexasFootball that he is also in discussions with Texas and Kansas about June official visits. The Longhorns' staff has mentioned the last weekend in June. That would be the big recruiting weekend for the Longhorns. 

The Longhorns offered Johnson June 11, 2023 after a standout camp performance. Wide receivers coach Chris Jackson, area recruiter Blake Gideon and head coach Steve Sarkisian have remained in constant communication since that time. He attended Texas Junior Day January 20, as well as Texas A&M Junior Day January 27. OnTexasFootball continues to feel like Texas is in a very good spot headed into the spring evaluation period. 

Johnson is up to 23 offers after Florida, Utah, Houston, TCU, Arkansas and UTEP in January. 

Johnson is currently on the hardwood for the defending 3A State Champions. He will focus on track after the conclusion of basketball season. He posted a personal best of 10.49 (wind-aided) in the 100 meters last spring. 

Houston officially announces the hiring of former Texas defensive line coach Oscar Giles Monday afternoon.

Giles was with the Longhorns prior to the hiring of Bo Davis when Steve Sarkisian arrived in 2021. There is familiarity here with the area of recruiting, specifically in the Houston area where he will now be calling H-Town home.

The defensive line is an important position in the 2025 cycle and it could get much cloudier with the emergence of Giles to the region.

The Texas Longhorns offered 2025 offensive lineman John Mills (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) on September 16, 2023. 

Since that time, offensive line coach Kyle Flood has made Mills a priority in the 2025 cycle. That includes multiple trips to San Fransisco to see Mills. And Mills and family have made three visits to Austin in less than a year. 

The 6-6, 325-pound IOL prospect and OnTexasFootball 4-star informed OTF Monday morning that his official visit date to Texas will be June 14-16. 

Texas initially talked to Mills about the last weekend in June, but his family will be out of the country that week/weekend. 

Mills currently sports 17 offers. Since Texas offered in September, Mills has added Power 5 offers from Nebraska, Michigan, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Utah, TCU, USC, Texas A&M, Florida, Penn State and Arkansas. Washington was his first offer in 2022. 

He made January Junior Day visits to Texas (January 19-20) and Florida (January 27-28). He has been on campus at Washington and Michigan multiple times in the last year. 

Mills comes from a family of college athletes with multiple family members having played at the University of Washington. 

IMG Academy 2025 DB to visit in April

Texas offered 2025 defensive back Major Preston of Hopewell (Va.) IMG Academy January 30. 

Since that time, the 6-1, 175 pound versatile defensive back has been in contact with safeties coach Blake Gideon multiple times. 

Preston told OnTexasFootball Monday morning that he has a visit scheduled to Texas April 13-14 to meet the staff and take in a spring practice. 

Preston currently has 22 offers with 11 coming since December of 2023. The offer list includes SEC programs Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida and Ole Miss. 

Brandon Brown and a Texas visit

Texas verbal and OnTexasFootball 4-star defensive tackle Brandon Brown (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) told OnTexasFootball Sunday that he will be in Houston March 22-24 for a 7v7 tournament. It’s likely that he will head to Austin on the 22nd with his California Power 7v7 team and make a first visit to The Forty Acres. 

Brown said he will also be in Dallas April 5th weekend for a 7v7 tournament. 

Brown told OTF he is yet to speak with new defensive line coach Kenny Baker (as of Sunday afternoon), but has texted with head coach Steve Sarkisian and Tashard Choice. 

“I’m just taking the process slow right now,” Brown told OnTexasFootball Sunday. “They told me I’m a great player (when Texas visited the school), and can’t wait to for me to come visit. I have text with Coach Sark. He just said he can’t wait to get me on campus to visit. Same with Coach Choice last week.”

The visit to Texas and time spent with Coach Baker will be impactful on his recruitment moving forward.

“I’m just going to try to get everything sorted out when I get out there. Spend time with the staff, Coach Baker.” 

Brown says LSU, Florida, Texas A&M, Tennessee, and Ohio State are all in. He made a visit to Texas A&M last summer, LSU last summer and Tennessee for a game this season (vs. Georgia). His relationship with LSU’s Bo Davis is the best of any position coach currently. 

Myron Charles and Texas

OnTexasFootball caught up with Sunshine State 4-star defensive lineman Myron Charles (Port Charlotte, Fla./High) Sunday afternoon. The 6-foot-4, 290 pound disruptor was offered by Texas February 1 when Jeff Banks stopped by the school. Since that time he has exchanged messages with members of the Texas staff. Charles reports that a spring visit is a possibility. Miami, Florida and Florida State are all recruiting Charles full steam. He was on campus in Miami in late January. 

The new additions via the portal have been getting acclimated to the day to day life as a Texas football player and most importantly, the culture of the program. I was able to speak with a source around the program over the weekend to get an idea of how the new faces are acclimating with the team so far.

Former Alabama LB Kendrick Blackshire has had a seamless transition since arriving on campus. Blackshire joins the Longhorn program which boasts several familiar faces from Blackshire's recruitment days back in the DFW area and time at Duncanville.

The speed of former Alabama WR Isaiah Bond is immediately noticeable. That should not come as a surprise, but Bond has an extra gear that has folks excited here.

Joining Bond in the wide receiving room is former UH pass catcher Matthew Golden. The former Klein Cain standout may not have that same initial burst as Bond, however Golden does possess the ability to change directions very well which has been evident thus far in workouts. Also, credit Jaydon Blue for getting Golden up to speed pretty quickly here.

I have yet to hear a whole lot about Taioalii Savea since his arrival, but will dive in a bit this week.

One of the first commits out of the portal was former Clemson DB Andrew Mukuba. The former Austin LBJ defensive back is back home where he has really fit in well with the DB room. I will dive into the mentality of the defensive back room a bit later when we start previewing spring ball, but Mukuba's business like approach to the game has trickled down.

Mukuba has been working non-stop, whether it be team-led winter conditioning, or individual sessions off of the 40 Acres. We have talked about one year rentals for guys like Bolden and Bond at WR, that is the thought process from Mukuba has well as he hopes to hear his name drafted very early in the 2025 NFL Draft.

According to a high-ranking university source, the riff between Texas and the Big 12 has not ebbed in recent months, even if it is no longer a major topic within the athletic department.

Brett Yormark's public pre-season comments in Lubbock and those of deputy Big 12 commissioner Tim Weiser on radio row at Big 12 media days still echo in the memories of Texas power brokers. Those words and actions have swayed the current University of Texas athletic leadership to no longer genuinely contemplate playing any former Big 12 school in football or basketball. Not for the foreseeable future.

When Texas (and Oklahoma) first accepted the invitation to move into the SEC, Tech attempted to publicly negotiate an agreement with the Horns to continue playing an annual football game. The Red Raiders can now put those plans in the rear-view mirror.

"It's just not going to happen," the source said of any Big 12 teams on the future schedule in football or basketball. "The Big 12 made their bed."

The attitude of others toward Texas apparently plays a role in that decision.

"We're the bad guys," the source said. "We're always the bad guys when all we want is what's best for us. Any one of them would have done the same if they had gotten the invite (to the SEC) that we did."

The Texas staff offered 19 2025 prospects in January through February 2nd while on the road around the country evaluating the cycle.

That list includes four at the Longhorns Junior Day January 20.
