Let's talk receivers to start.

- Ryan Wingo continues to show out as a true freshman. Behind the scenes, Wingo is being talked about as possibly the most talented true freshman on the team. At receiver specifically, Wingo and Aaron Butler are both showing some early promise in workouts. Parker Livingstone and Freddie Dubose Jr. have been behind those two. However, keep in mind, this is very early in workouts and both Livingstone and Dubose are coming off of significant injuries.

- Isaiah Bond is expected to be the team's No. 1 receiver at this point. However, I am told that Matthew Golden has been a pleasant surprise. "He's a little like a silent assassin," the source said. "He doesn't say much. But he's a hard worker."

- The Texas pro day is expected to be March 20. Quinn Ewers will be throwing at pro day. It's not unusual for an underclass quarterback to participate in a pro day. 

The thing about pro day is it typically brings to campus not just area scouts of NFL teams but also national ones and cross-checkers.

It will be the first time many pro scouts actually see Ewers work out in person, even if he's really there throwing to Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, Jordan Whittington and JT Sanders.

- Byron Murphy continues to rise up NFL draft boards. Yesterday, an agent told me that Murphy could go as high No. 8 overall or as low as No. 16. That's a huge jump in expectations. It is the best high-low projection I've heard of Murphy from anyone.

"He's going to kill the combine," the agent told me. "The numbers he's putting up right now (in private workouts) are insane."

- Texas continues to eye the portal opening following spring practice. The feeling remains that Texas will push hard for a top-line defensive tackle/nose guard type. While it's highly unlikely, do not be surprised if Texas even thinks about adding two more at the position if necessary and the right ones come available.

Additional notes:
Hastings (Texas) High 2025 EDGE Smith Orogbo told OnTexasFootball Tuesday evening he has not spoken with the Texas staff since being offered in January. He knows USC will be one June official visit. Texas A&M (spoken with Mike Elko and Jay Bateman) is another possibility. Didn't rule out spring visit to Texas.

Spring (Texas) High 2025 defensive tackle Floyd Guidry (6-1, 285) is one prospect eyeing an April decision, barring a change. TCU will get a March visit on the 23rd. Texas, TCU, Houston and Texas Tech are talked about the most. 

Austin (Texas) Lake Travis defensive lineman Gus Cordova told OnTexasFootball Tuesday that he has spoke with new defensive line coach Kenny Baker since Baker was hired. Junior Day visits were made to Texas A&M, Texas and Oregon. 

LSU will have a big visit weekend March 9. Two top Texas targets scheduled to attend are Lufkin (Texas) High DL Zion Williams and Mansfield (Texas) Timberview DL Dilan Battle. Both are OnTexasFootball 4-star prospects. 

OnTexasFootball continues to believe Texas leads for Hitchcock (Texas) High WR and OnTexasFootball 4-star Kelshaun Johnson (5-11.5, 170). Texas A&M WR coach Holmon Wiggins did impress Johnson at Junior Day January 27. Two OV's are set: Penn State (May 31-June 2) and Texas Tech (June 8-10). Texas is likely June 28-30, but not locked in yet. Of note, Texas A&M is seriously recruiting teammate, good friend and 2025 Texas Tech QB commit Lloyd Jones (6-3, 210).

First off, Del Valle has produced a solid D1 piece or two basically every other year since I arrived in Austin. The school has tremendous facilities, some of the nicest in the state, yet has seen a lot of turnover at the head coaching spot over the last few years. Now with Coach Todd Patmon in charge, it is expected to see much improved consistency on the field and development for prospects.

Steve Sarkisian and Johnny Nansen stopped by on January 12. I believe this was the first stop for Nansen as a member of the Texas staff.

But to the point of the trip, I wanted to get an update on 2025 DB Coleman Patmon and his recruitment. The 6-foot-3 defensive back is the younger brother of former Kansas (2009-11) Oklahoma State CB Tyler Patmon (2012-13), who ended up spending parts of five seasons in the NFL for six different franchises.

Patmon has started popping on the recruiting trail a good bit. Since January 24, Patmon has received offers from Minnesota, Arizona, North Texas, TCU and Arkansas. 

The interesting part here is where Patmon projects the best. He told me on the trip that the majority of schools view him as a safety or cornerback with of course nickel being thrown into the mix. TCU pitched the idea of linebacker which is where I had originally anticipated his body would lend him to fit best once he matured out a bit.

As an athlete, there are no questions about Patmon. He has superb height and length, and during workouts, he displayed effortless flexibility with easy strides when running.

Sarkisian and Nansen met with Patmon for about 15 minutes when they visited campus just over a month ago. The Longhorns have yet to offer, but they did push for Patmon to visit campus for the January 20 Junior Day – Patmon was on campus at Houston that weekend, however.

Right now, only Houston has an official visit locked in for Patmon. There were also discussions about trips to TCU and Arkansas. I will be interested to see if Texas circles back around in the spring time or tries to get him back on campus for one of the spring ball visit weekends.

2025 Del Valle DL Jeremiah Robinson caught my attention as well. He recently was named DL MVP of the Texas Football Showcase hosted over the weekend in central Texas. Robinson is 6-foot-1, though only 260 pounds at the moment. 

Robinson does bring plus wingspan and hand size, though the weight could be a bit of a deterrent at the moment. Regardless, a 2nd team All-District recipient from a year ago should not be overlooked in a district with Westlake, Lake Travis and Dripping Springs.

The final prospect I wanted to highlight was 2026 LB Michael Dent III. Of course the idea of Patmon as a LB crossed my mind when I heard Nansen stopped by to visit, though perhaps I was overlooking Dent. Only two offers are in the book right now for Dent (Arkansas State and North Texas), but there remains plenty of room for him to develop.

Dent is a basketball player as well and will run track in the spring. The coaching staff at DV told me Arkansas State's coaching staff offered after watching him dunk from a stationary two-footed stance in January. TCU and Texas State hosted Dent for games in the fall. Plenty of room to develop for Dent, but someone that has the athletic tools to become a P5 guy.

These evaluations in person will be critical for Steve Sarkisian and Milwee with the Longhorns yet to extend an offer to a 2026 quarterback as of February 13.

No one truly needs a reminder, but Texas will be joining the SEC in 2024 as well. The SEC for the last 15 seasons has been the gold standard for conferences in terms of NFL Draft production. On top of a full SEC schedule, the Longhorns will also take a trip up north to Ann Arbor to face off against the defending National Champions.

Which leads me to the following talking point – how many NFL departures are expected from each P5 opponent on the Texas 2024 schedule.

In total, 53 NFL caliber players are off of the schedule for Texas in 2024. Add in two more from Colorado State as well, who Texas begins the season with on August 31.

Interestingly, in 2023, Texas entered the season with 52 NFL caliber players having departed the year previously with invitations to the NFL Combine. It is not a guaranteed science, nor does it give an indication on what is to come the upcoming season on the field. But it is interesting.

What is to come for the upcoming season? A quick rundown of what each team is losing to the NFL. This won't include a look at the portal, which teams like Texas A&M have been hamstrung by this offseason as well.

Michigan – Just about every meaningful starter from a year ago with the exception of Will Johnson, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant.

Mississippi State – Three combine invites went to the defensive side of the ball. Miss State also lost a wide receiver in Lideatrick Griffin (658 yards in 2023).

Oklahoma – Only three invites for OU this offseason. All three come on the offensive line which will have 100% turnover this upcoming season.

Georgia – Ten feels a bit low for UGA, but that also does not include a handful of impactful portalers. Regardless, UGA has reloaded in the talent department and will be a top five preseason team in the country once again.

Vanderbilt – Well, zero.

Florida – Florida was hit much more significantly in the portal than the draft. WR Ricky Pearsall was the Gators' No. 1 WR in 2023, he will be in the NFL next fall.

Arkansas – I was actually surprised to see five names on this list. Old recruiting heads might remember Dwight McGlothern, he is the most notable name to depart. Three other combine invites go to the trenches, then a specialist.

Kentucky – Kentucky's backfield is heading to the NFL, QB Devin Leary and RB Ray Davis. Two departures in the back seven as well on the defensive side of the ball.

Texas A&M – Three big departures here from College Station: LB Edgerrin Cooper, WR Ainias Smith, DB Domani Richardson. But again, the portal hit the Aggies much harder.

San Francisco (Calif.) Archbishop Riordan IOL Peter Langi told OnTexasFootball Tuesday morning that he will be in Austin to visit Texas March 16-17. He will make the visit with his mom and brother. 

Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood stopped by Archbishop Riordan last spring and in December. Flood offered the 6-5, 335 pound interior OL prospect September 13, 2023. 

Langi has seen his stock rise since the end of the 2023 season. He picked up offers from Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma, Florida, Miami (Fla) and Penn State since December.

Langi currently sports 38 offers. The list includes SEC offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M.

Team notes:

- Texas feels great about their offense.  They have about 10-12 guys they feel very comfortable with at the plate. Development has been huge during the offseason, leading up to Friday.

- Freshmen Will Gasparino and Tommy Farmer look to play a big part of this team. Nothing groundbreaking there, as we’ve discussed them in our videos, but have had a handful of people rave about them both.

- Sophomore Jalin Flores was a name that has been mentioned as a guy who’s steadily improved and has looked good. Obviously Flores came in with a lot of hype, but his freshman year didn’t go as anticipated, so that’s a good sign.

- I heard a lot of good things about OF Jared Thomas and they’re expecting yet another big year from him.

- The pitchers have made some big strides with Pierce taking the reigns. A noticeable change for sure. Was also told he loves being in this role.

- The coaching staff is expecting Lebarron Johnson Jr. to have a phenomenal season.  They truly believe he is one of the best pitchers in the country. Possibly even the best. He will be your Friday night pitcher.

- The staff also feels great about Charlie Hurley. He continues to look great and Hurley will be your Saturday starter.

- Your Sunday starter is up in the air.  Everyone has penciled in Tanner Witt, but ideally they want to bring him on slowly.  He will be more involved as this season progresses, but that could also be more of a closing role as well. It’s to be determined at this point.

- If it isn’t Witt, redshirt sophomore Cody Howard is a name to keep an eye on, along with Luke Harrison and David Shaw.  Don’t be surprised if one of those three names starts on Sundays, especially early in the season.

- Expect three freshmen pitchers to make some noise this season: Cole Selvig, Easton Tumis and Hudson Hamilton. They’ve impressed the staff early on and the trio of fresh arms are expected to turn some heads.
 

NIL Notes:

- If you’re a fan of Texas baseball, I implore you to please donate to the Texas One Fund and specify that the donation goes to baseball.  Texas is definitely doing better, NIL wise, but they are heading to the premier baseball conference. When that happens, the Horns will need to step their game up.

- SEC baseball is a completely different animal then what Texas fans are accustomed to and that goes for recruiting too.

- NIL was a big part of the reason guys like LBJ and Witt came back.  If Texas fans want to see continued success and players return, the NIL needs to really ramp up for the baseball program.
