Man On The Street
@Gerry Hamilton Piggy backing on GH tough district commentary, I would like to add a year and a district that is somewhat mind blowing. 1980 The Thomas Jefferson Yellowjackets (of Todd Dodge fame) went to state undefeated where they lost to Odessa Permian. That year TJ was the only team to go to the playoffs from their district. The PNG Indians had 2 district losses, one to West Orange Stark and the the other to TJ. West Orange Stark had only one loss and it was to TJ. On the road to the finals (maybe the semifinal) TJ played Spring Branch STRATFORD who finished the year with 3 losses. Those losses were to PNG, WOS and TJ. Theoretically, any one of those three teams could have played for state.

Imagine not making the playoffs due to one team getting in, and watching so many teams you were better than throughout the playoffs.
Glass Joe
In the late 1980s and into the early 1990s, Plano High, Lewisville, and Plano East were in the same district. Allen was eventually added to the district. Plano and Lewisville were beasts back then (each winning multiple state championships in the decade 1985-1996), and PESH and Allen were programs on the rise. Allen took over in the early 2000s and has won several state championships since.
MarkInAustin
Going back more years, Odessa Permian, Midland Lee, Amarillo Tascosa... at some point, west Texas lost its MOJO.
