Texas Sweeps Big XII Outdoor Track & Field Championships

WACO, Texas – The No. 8/9 Texas track and field programs swept the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with the women dominating the field with 150 points and the men edging out Texas Tech 134-to-115 points.

The women's win marks the fifth-straight outdoor conference title and gives head coach Edrick Floréal five titles in five attempts. The five consecutive titles matches the longest streak of outdoor championships (men or women) in Big 12 history. The men have now won three outdoor titles under Floréal in five seasons and the Longhorns have totaled 49 Big 12 conference titles in total and 15 with coach Flo.

The women dominated from the jump scoring in 21 of 24 events and won six events. Ackelia Smith started the afternoon winning the women's triple jump with a NCAA-leading mark of 13.92m (45-8) on her final jump, moving up to first place from third. The mark ranks as the fifth-best jump in UT history.

The Longhorn women lit up after Ziyah Holman and Dejanea Oakley won the 400-meter and the 200-meter respectively. Holman's season-best time of 50.99 moved her to No. 8 in the NCAA this season and to No. 9 on the UT All-Time Performer list. Freshman Lauren Lewisadded four points with her fifth-place finish in a personal-best time of 52.25.

Freshman Akala Garrett won the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 54.73 and hit the Olympic standard at just 19 years old. Garrett's time ranks as the second-fastest time in program history and ranks fourth in the world this season. She also added a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.30, while Emelia Chatfield finished fifth in 13.33.

Oakley was the fastest of three Longhorns in the 200m, running a personal best 22.60. Senior Kenondra Davis finished third with her own PB at 22.82 and Kevona Davis was fourth at 22.84. The 200m squad totaled 21 points and the 100-meter duo of Kevona Davis (11.32 – 3rd) and Oakley (11.38 – 7th) added eight.

The women's 4x100-meter relay finished third with a season-best time of 43.49 and moved to No. 13 on the NCAA list this season and Olivia Howell finished third in both the 1500m (4:09.70) and the 800m (2:02.23), while breaking her own 1500m school record by four seconds. Her 800m time moved her to No. 4 on the UT All-Time list.

Texas added nine points from the women's discus after Chrystal Herpin finished fourth with a heave of 53.13m (175-06) and Nina Ndubuisi finished fifth at 52.60m (172-07). Trinity Tomlinson tallied one team point in the high jump finishing eighth after clearing 1.76m (5-9.25).

The men were led by Yusuf Bizimana who won the 800-meter with a facility record time of 1:46.07. Bizimana is now a nine-time Big 12 Champion and a four-time 800m champion. Cole Lindhorst was fourth in 1:47.32 and later added a fifth-place finish in the 1500m at 3:42.02.

Sam Hurley scored 13 points after finishing as the runner-up in the high jump clearing 2.18m (7-1.75) and fourth in the pole vault at 5.30m (17-4.50). Dylan Lineberger finished sixth in high jump at 2.14m (7-0.25) to add three team points.

Leo Neugebauer was fourth in the discus with a heave of 58.61m (192-03) and Patrick Piperifinished eighth at 53.56m (175-08) for six team points.

The 4x100-meter relay of Marcellus Moore, Nolton Shelvin, Almond Small and John Rutledgefinished with the bronze medal from a season-best time of 38.90. Shelvin later added a silver medal in the 200-meter with a time of 20.22, a new personal best and moved to No. 2 on the UT All-Time Performer list.

Logan Popelka secured the bronze medal in the 400-meter dash with his personal-best time of 45.62 and moved to No. 9 on the UT All-Time performer list. Elijah Mosley finished sixth with a season-best 45.91.  Marcellus Moore also won the bronze medal in the 100-meter dash in 10.16 with his own season best and moved to No. 5 on the All-Time performer list tied with Lawrence Armstrong and Herkie Walls.

Kody Blackwood was sixth in both the 110-meter hurdles at 13.76 and the 400-meter hurdles in 50.80. Chris Brinkley was seventh in the 400m hurdles at 50.93.

The 4x400-meter relay of Popelka, Rutledge, Brinkley and Elijah Mosley ran away with the bronze medal with a time of 3:05.08.
