HS recruiting versus the portal

IMO I look at the new world of recruiting in two ways. The first is what is the best option for players in the portal, which means position wise.

Second, what is must have in recruiting for high school players.

Best gets in the portal

WR

DB

TE

LB

QB

RB

Toughest gets in the portal

DL

Edge

OT

Easier gets in high school recruiting

WR top 100

OL top 150

TE top 150

LB top 100

QB top 100

RB top 100

DB at least one top CB and safety

Toughest gets for high school recruiting

DL

Edge

DB more than 2 each position

This is for Texas. As I look at my list it seems you can go out and get a really good DB in the portal ,so maybe not a huge worry if you miss on a guy? But you can't miss on a HS DL or Edge. Texas must spend more resources on interior DL. That means, all the Staff has to be involved, especially Steve Sarkisian. Can't be out spent  or out worked by Oregon, LSU or OSU.  IMO

So let me ask this question?

1. Does it matter if you have a top 5 class with what you can get in the portal? Do you need 4 WR in a class?, 6 OL, 3 LB? All of these guys cost some amount of money. Could you take 2 top WR and use some of the UIL money to spend on a DL guy? And if you need another WR get one in the portal? The same for all positions.

I could be way off.

U would have to consider if u pass on a guy in high school to get a portal guy how does that affect the next high school class and also u may not want to gamble ur chances waiting on the portal like many Texas fans thought Michigan dt would jump in so overall it’s all situational

Is it make or break ... no.

But perception does always matter in recruiting. Texas doesn't want to have to battle that, so they have to sign highly ranked classes and develop those players for future NFL drafts.

There is zero excuse for Texas, or Texas A&M for that matter, to not recruit and sign future NFL draft caliber prospects at OL, WR, DB and EDGE out of the state of Texas on an annual basis.

DL is very interesting ... the state is not currently a producer of that same level of guys at DL... it's what makes the Georgia job the best in CFB right now ... the Peach State is producing size and speed at every position, and has Florida neighboring the south.

Texas has to battle nationally for DL's - in terms of what they are looking for.

With that said, Texas A&M and LSU will sign DL's out of Texas in the 2025 cycle the Horns passed on pursuing.
