Big 12 Tournament: No. 7 Texas vs. No. 10 Kansas State

The second round of the Big 12 tournament begins today in Kansas City. And that includes the No. 7 seed Texas Longhorns taking on No. 10 seed Kansas State at 6 p.m. central (Big 12/ESPN+).

For Texas (20-11, 9-9), a win or loss won't likely change anything from an NCAA Tournament seeding standpoint. If the bracketology projections are correct, Texas is locked into an 8/9 seed win or lose today. But a win over Kansas State today would send Texas into Thursday against No. 2 seed Iowa State with an opportunity to secure a 7 seed with a win. That makes the Big 12 Tournament meaningful for the Longhorns.

Kansas State (18-13, 8-10) enters the Big 12 Tournament playing for their NCAA Tournament lives. Headed into the game, the Wildcats will not make the Field of 68. Not only does KSU need to beat Texas today, but also needs to beat No. 2 seed Iowa State Thursday.

OnTexasFootball takes a look at the rankings and scenarios headed into the Big 12 Tournament.

Big 12 and the NCAA Tournament

The Big 12 is a near lock to be a nine bid league. The most of any conference this year. The record for bids by one conference is the Big East in 2011 with 11.

    1 seed - Houston
    3 seed - Iowa State
    3 seed - Baylor
    4/5 seed - Kansas
    5 seed - BYU
    6/7 - Texas Tech
    7/8 seed - Texas
    10/9 seed - TCU
    10/9 seed - Oklahoma

    Texas NCAA Tournament seeding scenarios

The Longhorns are going to be a No. 7 or No. 8 seed barring a run to the Big 12 Tournament Championship Game. The majority of bracketology projections continue to have Texas as a No. 8 seed, currently.

Joe Lunardi has Texas a No. 8 seed. One projection (Jerry Palm), has Texas a No. 9 seed.

The metrics for Texas have the Longhorns as a possibility to be a No. 7 seed

NCAA Men’s Basketball NET Rankings (March 1)
Texas is No. 25 in NCAA NET headed into the Big 12 Tournament. The Horns moved up 15 spots in the last two weeks from No. 40 prior to the win in Lubbock.

The Longhorns are 5-9 in Quad 1 games, 3-1 vs. Quad 2, 5-1 vs. Quad 3 and 7-0 vs. Quad 4.

Kansas State is No. 70 in NCAA NET, and would be a fourth Quad 2 win for the Horns.

Should the Horns advance to Thursday, Iowa State would be a Quad 1 win opportunity on a neutral court. Iowa State is No. 9 in NCAA NET.

    T-Rank
Texas is No. 19 in Bart Torvik’s rankings currently, up from No. 23 prior to the win over Oklahoma.

2024 Ken Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings
Texas checks in at No. 23 after being No. 25 prior to the victory over Oklahoma.

Som Texas national rankings of note ...

55th in the country in team effective field goal percentage ...

    https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/1288/p2

44th in the country in team three-point percentage ...

    https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/152

44th in the country in team free throw percentage ...

    https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/150

36th in the country in team assists per game ...

    https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/216

Texas offensively ... that dog will hunt on a neutral court in near talent neutralized scenarios.

Hate to think about a loss as win but perhaps a longer rest for Disu & Co would benefit their NCAA Tournament play. Double edged sword to be sure.

I'm one that hates the NBA sitting out guys purposely, so this does go against the grain of my general thinking ...

May take is probably not a popular one ...

If Texas wins tonight, go all out to beat Iowa State because Texas would very likely end up getting off the 8/9 seed line.

If Texas were to beat K-State and Iowa State, sit Disu vs. Baylor. I know it's not popular at all, but Disu playing three physical grueling games in three days is not the ideal scenario for his health, and heading into the NCAA Tournament.

To add ... last year Texas could have played Timmy Allen in the Big 12 Championship, but they made an NCAA Tournament decision with that one. And it was the correct decision.

That underlines how important DD is to any competitive game and how worried all of us are, including Agentmule to whom you responded, regarding DD's health.

Perhaps another Big 12 Tournament strategy would be to limit DD's minutes in each game, on the assumption that Shedrick has about 15 minutes worth of stamina per outing.  However, that option may actually be limited by Brock's right hand and thumb.  He has no shooting ability now.  He should not be on the floor with Shedrick.

I think it is a dilemma.  Sitting Timmy Allen last season was not as disabling to that squad as sitting DD would be now.

One more question, for Gerry:  What would be the NCAA seeding upside from three consecutive wins in the Big 12 Tournament?

IMO, Texas won't limit Disu tonight or against Iowa State if the Horns play Thursday. Those are the go get 'em games.

Plays into the last Q ... I don't think Texas will move any higher than a 7 seed even if they win the Big 12 Tournament. Doesn't mean I would agree with it, but it's just unlikely with everything else in CBK taking place in terms of conference tournaments/results.

With Texas having to win 4 in 4, there is no reason to try to win this tournament given the health of this team heading into the tournament of our best player. I agree with Gerry, going 2-1 is the best outcome for this team.

100%. Four games in four days headed into NCAA Tournament is a losing formula

Texas is definitely the better team ...

Kansa State shoots a lot of 3's (more 3-point attempts than free throws on the season), and hits only 31%. They also average more TO's than assists on the season. If K-State doesn't shoot the three well, tough to see them scoring enough points tonight unless Texas has a cold game from mid-range to three

I don’t get why Texas isn’t a 7 when just about every metric has Texas inside the top 25. Heck they are a borderline 6 by that measure.

I don’t get it but yeah we need to get a 7 seed. That would give Texas a chance to reach the sweet 16. Texas isn’t beating a 1 seed in the 2nd round.

Texas has beaten KStete and didn’t play well. They could have beaten Iowa St if not for an atrocious 1st half.
