Moderators CJ Vogel Posted September 23 Moderators Share Posted September 23 A quick look at the true freshmen on roster and what the redshirt eligibility looks like four games in. Of course, the NCAA has allowed it for freshmen to appear in up to four games while retaining their redshirt status. Texas is in a position now due to their depth to make long term decisions with freshmen and whether or not the appeal to a redshirt fits what they want to do with each player long term. At the moment, the players at the four game threshold are: EDGE Colin Simmons WR Ryan Wingo CB Kobe Black RB Jerrick Gibson LB TyAnthony Smith DL Alex January P Michael Kern
HenryJames
Do they want Trey Owens to burn his redshirt?
closetojumping
Just looking at that list of freshmen, holy smokes, man. It really looks like an amazing class, and that’s on top of the excellent classes ahead of it. It’s gratifying that almost none of these guys is a “must play” for Texas this season, yet still, guys are forcing their way into legitimate minutes because of their talent. I've not yet heard what the plan will be with Owens. I would believe they would prefer to redshirt him, but with only three scholarship QB's on roster, you don't have the luxury of finding other options to get on the field. Also, similarly to Arch, these snaps are important for development for Owens. If the redshirt is burnt but he is able to see 100 snaps this year, that's incredibly valuable. Right now, Owens is at 27 snaps through two games.

There are instant impact guys available with the 2024 freshmen class and that's such a luxury when combining them with the older group on campus at the moment. Great point.
TarrantCoHorn
Wondering about third team QB snaps because you are blowing everyone out is a nice problem to have.

MarkInAustin
Trey will be the #2 next season. When QE is out he is the #2 NOW. So my bet is that if QE comes back for OU and for the remainder of the season we will only see Trey twice more. But if QE misses more than two more games the RS will probably be lost. I am still looking for Cole Lourd to throw a TD to Thatcher Milton, of course.
