bierce
A lot of good games this weekend, starting with (rankings are according to Pomeroy): 11/15 #10 Alabama @ #12 Purdue Interesting match-up in that Oats likes his offense to play fast and take a lot of threes, while Painter makes his guys work on defense to make possessions drag out and chase people off the arc. Daniel Jacobsen, Purdue's new 7'4" center, is probably out for the year with a fractured tibia he suffered in the first minute of their second game. You hate to see leg injuries on really tall players. You never know if they will properly heal. Purdue being a Matt Painter coached team had another 7 footer ready to come in. Will Berg played well off the bench against Northern Kentucky but he did almost nothing in 16 minutes against Yale, a game that saw Yale close to within 6 in the final 3 minutes. Alabama hasn't impressed anyone in its last two games which were single digit wins at home Arkansas State and McNeese State in games in which Alabama surrendered a big run midway through the second half. #15 tOSU @ #18 A&M About the only thing A&M did well in its season opening loss to UCF was hit offensive glass. About the only thing tOSU did wrong against us was fail to protect defensive glass. Think there might be an emphasis on this facet of the game tonight? tOSU is leading the nation in opponent fg%. A&M shot like crap against UCF, especially in the 14-2 run it gave up at the end of the game. #21 Florida @ #80 FSU Florida State commits more fouls than any other P5 team so far this year. The Seminoles play at a fast pace, but still . . . FSU is now far better than it was in 2022-23, but it doesn't have much experience. FSU has one of the tallest rosters in the country. It will play twin towers most of the game, even though Hamilton lost out to UF for the 7'9" guy (Rioux, who is redshirting), but Deng gives them a perimeter game when he's in. The others need to get the ball near the basket. Former Ole Miss trouble case Malique Ewins starts. Florida hasn't seemed too bothered by the Title IX investigation against Todd Golden. It is an experienced team that goes only 8 deep. It draws a lot of fouls, so this game could be decided by ft disparity. I mean, that disparity might be deserved, but look for it to happen. #72 Georgia @ #88 Georgia Tech I always liked Mike White, and I thought he was unfairly treated at Florida, so I was glad to see him get another P5 job right away, and he has done well at Georgia so far. Crean left an awful mess there. Georgia has 2 players we sought at one point or another--Freshman big man Asa Newell (I sure would have liked to add him), and senior SG Tyrin Lawrence (I wasn't much of a fan). Newell and Godfrey have made Georgia one of the best rebounding teams in the country so far. This is Stoudamire's second season at Georgia Tech, succeeding Josh Pastner, who was a . . . oh, let's be polite . . . questionable hire at the time. Luke O'Brien missed the last game with a minor injury and is expected to play tonight. GT lost by 12 at home to North Florida. Georgia just came off a 13 point home win over UNF. Back later with updates and results and back tomorrow with Saturday's games.

bierce
BTW, LSU beat KSU in the Octagon of Boo last night, with former Wildcat Cam Carter leading LSU with 20 points.
bierce
Nothing to do with SEC teams, but Virginia-Villanova is on right now. Kyle Neptune is in big trouble at 'Nova for missing the tournament his first two seasons and starting 2-2 this year with a ten point home loss to Pomeroy 160 Columbia and coming off a road loss to Pomeroy 102 St. Joe's. Meanwhile, Ron Sanchez has the interim tag for UVa inheriting the job when Bennett resigned three weeks before the season started. 11-8 Nova right now with 11:29 left in the half. Really unimpressive play so far.
bierce
So UVa hit 5 straight threes to take a 23-14 lead before finally missing one. UVa moves well on offense, and was getting guys open all over the perimeter, but it seems to lack athleticism. Nova is pretty bad at defense. bierce
Florida is torching FSU so far. 37-19 with 5:30 left first half. Florida 12/20 fg and 7/12 bta. No foul disparity so far.

bierce
Florida won 87-74. FSU is not that good this year, but the Florida offense is a pretty thing to watch. Bama going down hard. Tide was up 2 with 9 minutes to go but have been outscored 23-13 since and trail by 8 with 25 seconds left.
bierce
Georgia up 27-19 at the half. Payne just got away with a blatant goaltending. tOSU up 3-0 after 3 minutes.
bierce
A&M defense has been smothering this game. 9-3 Agroids with 13:00 to go. tOSU shooting 1/11. Make it 12-3.
bierce
Let's make this thread about everything in CBB. Big 12 is having a hell of a night. WVU was obliterated by Pitt. TCU lost by double digits @ Michigan. Arizona is down 11 @ Wisky at the half. Marquette just got a big gift @ Maryland. Golden Eagle driving had ball slapped off his leg out of bounds, but outside of final 2 minutes, so not reviewed. Marquette given ball and converted. Now up 8 after it got the offensive non-rebound from an airball and converted.
bierce
Marquette got another gift when a clean(ish) steal whistled for a foul. Maryland hit consecutive 3s but still trailing by 4 with 42 seconds left, but forced a 5 second violation and converted. One possession game with 35 seconds. Maryland steal, drive the lane, blocked.. 76-74 Marquette shooting ft. Missed the first. A&M scored first 6 in second half to go up 15 against tOSU. Marquette missed both. Maryland now shooting ft to try to tie. Missed first.
bierce
Maryland missed both. Marquette ran clock and shooting ft with 6.6 seconds left. made both. Georgia up 10 with 1:37 left. GT put on a run early in the second half to take a 1 point lead, but Georgia has stormed back and has it under control.
bierce
Arizona on a 20-6 run to cut Wisky lead to 4 early in the second half.
bierce
Georgia will win, but White will undoubtedly tell his guys how stupid they were to foul a driving GT player while up 9 with 11 seconds to go while grabbing the rim to make for a basket interference if the layup didn't go in. 77-69 final. A&M up 12 with 13:30 left.
bierce
56 fouls called and 78 ft shot in the UA-Wisky game with 5 minutes to go. I'm glad I don't have Peacock and can't watch that mess.
bierce
Gard took over Wisky from ryan in 2015-16. His teams have hit the century mark twice since then. It is 99-86 Wisky with almost 3 minutes to go.
Moderators Gerry Hamilton Posted November 16 Moderators Share Posted November 16 Ohio State 8-30 from three-point line ... Micah Parish 0-6 John Mobley is a tremendous shooter, but he wasn't going 100% this season lol Texas gave A&M the tape to get the best defensive effort on the perimeter, and Ohio State wasn't going to replicate 51% from three on the road anyways
bierce
To recap the conference yesterday: Purdue beat Alabama 87-78, using a 13-0 run over two minutes to erase a 6 point lead Bama had with about 10 minutes left in the game. Bama owned the boards in the first half, but Purdue took them over the last 10 minutes of the game. A&M beat tOSU handily. Game was never in doubt in the second half. A&M hit threes on its first two possessions of the second half and followed that with 4 free throws to run out to a 17 point lead. tOSU never got closer than 13 after that. Florida beat FSU by shooting lights out early, scoring on 10 of 13 possessions in a first half stretch, and closing with a 10-1 run after FSU had climbed to within 4. FSU made it a game by forcing Florida to commit 19 turnovers, but the Seminoles don't shoot well, didn't defend the paint well, and Florida could either score or get the offensive rebound and try again most of the game. Georgia won 77-69 despite shooting just .167 from 3. A game of runs in the second half. GT went on a 13-2 run to take a brief lead, but Georgia answered with a 14-0 run. bierce
11/16 Five games today, or should I say two games and three entirely one-sided exhibitions. 364 MVSU @ 27 Texas 4pm cst You don't often see Pomeroy go out on a limb and give a team a 100% probability of winning a game. Texas had a 99.2% probability of winning at tip-off against Chicago State. Today, the probability is 99.95%, rounded up on the conference page to 100%. Pomeroy's media "Thrill Score" for today's games is 28.6. Our game is at 6.1. I've said enough elsewhere about our poor scheduling, so I will only say I hope we see Vinson and Pryor play a lot today. 332 Stetson @ 45 OU 1 pm cst Thrill score 8.6 on this one, the second least thrilling match-up in the country today. Three years without an NCAA tournament appearance in Norman has Porter Moser sweating the season. Falling behind Northwestern State by 8 early in the second half probably should not instill much confidence, even if Sooners closed strong and won by 16. 328 Jackson State @ 85 Vandy 2 pm cst Vandy has 9 players averaging 15 minutes or more and no one averaging 25 or more. The rotation may start to compress a little now that Hoggard can start playing full-time. Vandy beat a decent Cal team by 16 in its last outing. Jackson State lost to a bubble team by 37, to Houston by 57, and to High Point by 9, but High Point isn't terrible. Vandy isn't a bubble team just yet, and it has been very poor at shooting from the arc, but Jackson State is terrible at defending any part of the court. 60 South Car @ 39 Indiana 2pm cst Ooh. Thrill score 55.3 here. South Carolina has the sort of schedule I envision Texas having. A couple of patsies, a couple of 200-250 teams, 4 games against 100-150 teams, 2 games against top 50 teams, and a neutral site tournament with 4 P5 teams, the worst being 107 Va Tech. And there are two true road games in there. Not a crushing schedule by any means, but a very good one. Maybe a more marquee opponent than Clemson as your biggest non-conference game would improve things, but I still think USCe's AD and Lamont Paris have scheduled very well. Yes, the Gamecocks lost to UNF, but they have plenty of opportunities to make that up with this game, games against Xavier aand Michigan (if they advance to meet each other in Fort Myers), the home game against Clemson, and a road game at Boston College. USCe lost three starters but still has a lot of returning players from last year's 6 seed team, and it added Nick Pringle from Alabama. If Jamarii Thomas can get his turnovers under control, this might be a pretty good team, but he's a small pg just promoted from Norfolk State. If Cam Scott thought he was a one and done, his first three games might have corrected his vision. He's shooting 4/19 on the season and played just 11 minutes in the last game. Indiana added Ballo, Myles Rice, and Kanaan Carlyle through the portal. This is its first game against anybody worth mentioning.
bierce
Oh, yeah, the top thrill score of the day is 84 Colorado State vs. 61 Mississippi 3pm cst Game is being played in a suburb of Memphis, about 55 miles from Oxford, 74 if you drive it because there is a lake in the way. Google searching oxford southaven ms distance reveals a map showing a 4317 mile flight from the UK. I guess the thrill score includes the risk of Randi Trew showing up. Mississippi barely beat Grambling and struggled to put away South Alabama. It seems to have fixed last year's rebounding problem by adding Dia, but shooting has been poor.
