tsip92 Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 We’ll see this coming week if the trend continues next week, but to this point the pretenders have been embarrassed on the playoff stage. I think there’s been an assumption that if the Tech’s, SMU’s, etc of the world that if they just make it to the playoffs that all of a sudden they’ll become legitimate contenders because they can build off of that playoff appearance. What the playoff has shown to date is that the 2nd tier teams aren’t even close to contending. The importance of that is that it provides a stark contrast to the two power conference heavyweights that build through HS recruiting and supplement with the portal. Will the Double Eagle’s (Tech boosters), etc continue to spend big on a handful of portal recruits if they know it won’t really make them competitive? Plugging 5 holes in a roster with 60 holes is really just throwing money away. Being Big XII champion or runner up doesn’t have that much impact if your conference continually gets embarrassed on the big stage. Getting that dumb money (overpaying to get talent to a team that wouldn’t get a look otherwise) is an important step in rationalizing the NIL / portal market in my opinion. I guess we’ll see. 2 Quote
Jay Kennedy Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 Having an older and experienced team matters. One thing I don’t think has been discussed much re: Texas and the transfer portal is Sark seems to get one year rentals. He seems to not want to rock the boat with multi year eligibility guys that are not planning to go pro. He has seen it did not work out with Cole or Savea or Carter. He likes to sprinkle on top with players off to the NFL. i understand that is a luxury but also different that some schools approach. Quote
Burnt Orange Horn Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 Savea and Cole evidently judged the Texas talent pool was too deep. I do not even remember Carter. Quote
