  • The Price of Winning

    Bobby Burton

This off-season, Texas is paying the price of winning.

Yet another of Steve Sarkisian’s behind-the-scenes employees has left for increased responsibilities elsewhere.

Bobby Merritt, who was responsible for breaking down opposing film and evaluating prospects in the portal for the Horns in 2023, has been hired by Rice University as its new general manager.

The move has yet to be announced publicly but Merritt started with Rice on Friday.

Merritt’s former boss at Texas, Billy Glasscock who was the director of player personnel for the Horns, left in January to become the General Manager for Ole Miss.

That’s the price of winning. People will move up and get more responsibilities at other places.

Sark has without a doubt proven to be an excellent evaluator of talent at all levels of the game. He’ll find a quality replacement and reload

There was a tweet floating around saying there was an NFL coach/office guy that was rumored to be heading to Austin and being part of Sarks staff.. wonder if he's the replacement

Yes, there are two possibilities from what I hear. One is a Jets guy and another is a 49ers guy.

Continuing the trend of staffing NFL guys

I can help out too, if needed. I've watched a lot of football.

This is just another sign that the Longhorn program is on the right track. Our appearance in the playoffs, three years of top 10 recruiting classes, losing coaches to promotions (especially head coaching positions), front office types being sought after, and the success the Horns had at the Combine. TCU made the Championship game a few seasons ago but could not continue that success. In other words it was a one season fluke. It is a great time to be a Horn.
