No. 11 Baseball runs winning streak to 14 with victory over UT Arlington

AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore Ethan Mendoza delivered a go-ahead two-run triple in the eighth, as No. 11 Texas won its 14th straight game with a 7-4 victory over UT Arlington on Tuesday.

With the game deadlocked at 3-3 in the eighth, the Longhorns (14-1) showed off their patented Texas Fight at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Center fielder Will Gasparino and catcher Rylan Galvan both reached safely to lead off the frame, setting the stage for Mendoza. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound second baseman shot a liner down the right field line to plate the eventual game-winning runs.

Shortstop Jalin Flores and freshman Adrian Rodriguez added a pair of insurance tallies, with a sacrifice fly and RBI single, respectively.

The Mavericks (4-8) brought the tying run to bat in the ninth, but Texas sophomore righty Thomas Burns (2) sealed the victory for the Longhorns in relief of rookie southpaw Bryce Navarre.

Navarre earned his first collegiate win, tossing 2 2/3 innings of one-run baseball.

Overall, Longhorn freshmen secured 23 of the 27 outs on the mound.

In his first career start, right-hander Drew Rerick allowed one run across 2 2/3 frames, while striking out two. Fellow righty Jason Flores followed by retiring seven of the nine batters he faced over 2 1/3 scoreless. The young arms were supported in the early going, sparked by Gasparino's run-scoring double in the second.

After UT Arlington jumped on the board an inning later, Texas regained the lead in the fifth.  Flores and Rodriguez — who finished with three hits — each drove in tallies, but the Mavericks answered immediately with a two RBI single.

In the victory, Mendoza extended his hitting streak to a team-leading 10 games. During that stretch, the Bedford, Texas, native has posted a club-best .500 average with four homers and 13 RBI.

The Longhorns will look to continue to build on their best start in 20 years, as Texas plays its first-ever Southeastern Conference series against Mississippi State at Dudy Noble Field this upcoming weekend.

The three-game set is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday.
