For 30+ years in corporate public affairs I attended many dinners and awards banquets.

At the end of my career I was like Kiffin. I often went and showed up to sign in and be seen and left early. Don't know about Lane, but I became unable to endure foolish folks.

The ONE I loved and will always remember was circa 1980 at the SWAC Annual Awards Dinner in Jackson MS. The most outstanding award went to a WR from Miss Valley State in Itta Bena MS. A kid by the name of Jerry Rice. My employer funded the season highlight film for the SWAC and sent me to present it. At the head table I was seated next to the legendary Gambling HC Robinson. At the time I thought Jerry Rice was too skinny to make it in the NFL... showed what I knew!
