  • Baseball Notes: Cal Poly

    Blake Munroe

Tonight the Longhorns start their three game series against Cal Poly. This will be the first time these two teams have squared off against each other.

The Mustangs rely on defense to win games. They have been… well, just not that good at the plate. Their pitching and defense keeps them in it, but it’s not elite by any means.

Texas, however, is averaging over 10 runs per game (although that stat is somewhat skewed after Tuesday’s game) and I’d expect to see an offensive explosion again this weekend.

The Horns currently have the 30th best team batting average in the nation, along with being No. 16 nationally for hits. On the mound, their team ERA is 2.84, which is the 37th best nationally

    Notes:

Don’t be surprised if Peyton Powell doesn’t play much this weekend, if at all. (Edit: He has been announced the starter at 3B for Friday night) He was hit by a pitch on Tuesday and has a pretty gnarly bruised foot. If that is indeed the case, Casey Borba will start.

    Starting Pitchers:

    Friday: LeBarron Johnson Jr.

    Saturday: Charlie Hurley

    Sunday: Cody Howard

    Recruiting:

One time Texas baseball commit Ed Small decommitted a few weeks ago, but committed to TCU yesterday for football. The Horned Frogs told Small he can play both. Don’t expect Pierce and co. to continue to pursue, unless Sark gets involved on the football side.

I would like to personally thank Chinook Seedery for sponsoring today’s baseball content.

Chinook seeds are by far the best. Let Powell play tonight and rest tomorrow. This should and needs to be a sweep. Galvan deserves to keep playing. Also like O Dowd moved down in lineuo and off 2nd base

Friday night non-conference games are really good. You get to see the best pitchers of some non-big name programs. The weekend games tend to get a bit sloppy.

We'll see what Cal Poly has left in the tank.

I'm looking forward to watching (In person with our alumni friends.) the Saturday night game against the toads of tcu. (April 20th, 2024, 6:00pm, after the Texas Football Spring Game.). Hook'em!

Cal-Poly pitchers have done a good job of keeping the Texas hitters in check for the most part. Halfway through the series they have held Texas to 5 runs.

To me this doesn’t look like a strong Cal Poly team. Hurley had a good outing against them but if he keeps chunking hangers it’s gonna get ugly when we face better competition. It’s early though. I do feel a lot better already about the bullpen.

Whitt is my biggest concern at this point.

He’s definitely not back yet. I don’t figure him to be an impact until maybe late season and that would be a bonus. That’s how I’m looking at it anyway.
