  • East Texas RB Decommits

    Bobby Burton

Tyler Chapel Hill running back Rickey Stewart has been committed to SMU for months. But not anymore.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder, announced his change of plans via a Twitter post earlier today.

Texas is expected to be a key player in his recruitment. The Longhorns offered him a scholarship on Jan. 20, the program's first Junior Day of the new recruiting cycle.

Stewart rushed for 2,855 yards and 40 TDs last season, averaging more than 10 yards per carry.

Very talented prospect who clearly was impacted by the Texas offer. Said it was an "experience that he had never felt before" when officially receiving the offer from Tashard Choice back on the Junior Day.

That Texas offer meant a ton to him.

Man, just watched 9 minutes of highlights and this kid was only tackled a handful of times outside the end zone.  What’s his level of competition like at Chapel Hill?

That is the issue with a lot of RB highlight videos. Its just a collection of long runs, usually better to skim through some game film if you can find it.  I didnt get through it all, but did notice he runs very upright. Though I didnt see a play where he needed to lower his pads. Definitely has speed and a nice 1 cut running style.

What if I roguely choose to disrespect his decision?  With that being said and all...

    Then you'd be a no-fun, crotchety old man. 😉

I agree with ya 100%, but I saw a more than one cut ability.  Granted, most plays he only needed one cut, but on a few other plays he showed great vision and elusiveness.  I’m hoping he’s like Jonathan Brooks and D’Onte Foreman where he just makes it look easy.  That’s why I asked about his level of competition.  Is he in a tough district?

1 cut comment was not a negative, more about a style.  He just seems to be very decisive. He sees the hole, its one cut, and he is off.

    2023 District 9-4A Division I Standings

They beat State Champ Gilmer in a non-district game 71-53.
