March Madness Report: Senior Day vs. Oklahoma

The Texas Longhorns will take the court vs. arch-rival Oklahoma at 1 p.m. central today firmly in the NCAA Tournament. With the uncertainty around Dylan Disu's health for the remainder of the season, it would certainly be big to pull out a win today to take any potential decision out of the NCAA Committee's hands.

If Texas loses today, and is bounced in the first game of the Big 12 Tournament and Disu's health is in doubt, that is not where Texas wants to be on Selection Sunday.

For Oklahoma (20-10, 8-9), they are very close to being in "must win" territory. A win today 100% keeps the Sooners out of the play-in game, or being left out scenario.

OnTexasFootball takes a look at the rankings and scenarios headed into today's game.

    Texas NCAA Tournament seeding scenarios

Win over Oklahoma today: Texas is likely locked into a 8/9 seed in the Big Dance barring a run in the Big 12 Tournament.

With a loss to Oklahoma today: Texas slides very close to the play-in game scenario in Dayton, and could be in trouble if they lose the first game of the Big 12 Tournament following a loss today - even though NCAA NET suggests otherwise.

    Texas’ Remaining Regular Season Schedule
    3/9 Oklahoma

NCAA Men’s Basketball NET Rankings (March 1)
Texas is No. 26 in NCAA NET headed into the game tonight. The Horns moved up 13 spots last week from No. 40 with wins at Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in Austin.

The Longhorns are 5-8 in Quad 1 games, 1-2 vs. Quad 2, 5-1 vs. Quad 3 and 8-0 vs. Quad 4.

    Quad 2 game remaining:
    No. 40 Oklahoma

    T-Rank
Texas is No. 22 in Bart Torvik’s rankings headed into Monday games.

2024 Ken Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings
Texas checks in at No. 25 headed into this week.

TCU's loss really hurts. It takes away our chance for another Q1 win, and OU's best player today hurt his ankle late. That is on top of OU being a bad match-up against us because our athletes are better, while KSU and Texas played a brick fest two weeks ago and KSU is fighting for their tournament lives. They win 2+ in the Big 12 tournament and they might make it in.

I don't think getting ISU in the quarters is any easier than playing UH in the quarters because ISU will have a shitton more fans in KC than UH, and has our 4 road losses can attest, the officials screw us badly in hostile environments. Opponents have nearly shot 2-1 FTs in our road conference losses, something like 170 to 90.

If Texas wins the 7 v. 10 game Wednesday, it's No. 2 seed Iowa State Thursdsay

Do you think Texas is a 7 seed for the NCAA tourney right now?  And if we lose to KSU in the first round of the Big 12 tourney, do we drop to an 8 seed, or stick at a 7 seed?

Lastly, what would Texas need to do in the Big 12 tourney next week to secure a 6 seed in the NCAA tourney?

Think Texas will be a 7 with a win over K-State... could go either way right now.

Texas would need to beat K-State and Iowa State to get a 6 IMO

I know we are focused on the current season at hand but any news on possible replacements for the seniors either via recruitment or portal?

    Not yet!

Just my opinion but fans consistently tend to overrate conference tourney results and their potential impact on seeding. Whatever seed we are today is unlikely to improve unless we make a serious run in the tourney. Likewise if we lose the first game in the conference tourney I don’t think it’ll impact our seed.

It seems to me year after year fans think these tourneys make a big difference and then are surprised when seeding looks about the same as it did before the tourney

Just me, but I think Texas needs to move on from both. Texas needs better and better offensive basketball players. More natural/instinctive offensive players.

I'm highly confident, as of today, Tre Johnson plays one year at Texas.

I agree on Hunter as I feel he's been our biggest issue this season. He's been such a net negative this season despite today and the Baylor home game. Don't even need a superstar, just a PG that will not turn the ball over and can consistently knock down an open shot would have helped this team tremendously over what we got from Hunter.

Maybe its the optimist in me but I still think Mitchell can be a plus player. Having him and Weaver next year (and their athleticism on both ends) around Tre Johnson is something I can still get excited about.

When NCAA updates team statistics after weekend games ...

Texas will be top 50 nationally (probably 41st or 42nd) in team three-point percentage, and top 50 in free throw percentage (probably 45th). Both very good numbers for Texas, and close to the numbers I pegged preseason to maximize ...

36.6% from three (my goal was 37-38%)

    75.7% FT % (I was lofty at 76-77%).

He always underseeds us. There was a good 2-3 week stretch where he was projecting us out of the tournament all together. He's really not that great at predicting the seeds at all.

I mean. It’s not an exact science.  Texas hasn’t been in the top 25 in a long time.  An 8 seed directionally means you are 29-32 which is probably right. Splitting hairs to say we are a 7 vs 8.

I also think the margin for being in the field was razor thin 2 weeks ago.  Most agreed they needed to go 2-2 over the last 4.  They handled business going 3-1.  Now they are in no question. Wasn’t the case 14 days ago.

@Gerry Hamilton First post here, but what is 2025 basketball recruiting looking like?

Great to have you here. Very early … a number of guys Texas likes were on campus during season …

PG Kingston Flemings being one .

SF Koa Peat has made OV. A top target

PG Mikel Brown is one Texas loves

G/W Shelton Henderson is a stud, but likely UH

G/SF Hudson Greer is in the picture
