  • Sunday Team Notes

    CJ Vogel

I was able to meet up late Saturday night with a source to pass along some interesting team notes as winter conditioning moves on.

    ***

First off, one of the names I have heard that is making an early impression is freshman cornerback Wardell Mack. The 6-foot corner has been someone that has really adjusted to the world of college football and gotten off to a hot start.

Next is DT Alex January, who has slimmed down about 10 pounds since he arrived to campus. Something to watch as Texas monitors its defensive tackle room, right now, it looks like January is taking the necessary steps to get onto the field early. We will see how that develops in the spring.

I have heard freshman EDGE Colin Simmons has added about 15-20 pounds of muscle since Christmas. Word is he is right around 240 pounds after being right around 220 when I last saw him in person in Orlando for the Under Armour All American Game.

If Simmons is able to carry 240 pounds at the moment, that would be massive for the Longhorns on the EDGE moving into the spring and into the fall from there.

Last freshman I have heard positive remarks about is Ty'Anthony Smith. The Jasper prospect has taken an impressive approach to college football as the only linebacker in the class. Smith was a late addition but has quickly adjusted to the world of college football. A bit of a slimmer lower body, but a wide open approach to body development is going to be something that might get Smith on the field earlier than expected. Positives all around.

January will be needed early barring a portal guy coming in.

He may be needed to play as many 10 to possibly 15 snaps a game.

Texas simply doesn’t have space eaters on campus right now outside of Mitchell. I could see Collins being 325 or so to play it as well although that is not his strength.

Mitchell better be ready. His body type is needed and I can’t imagine he came all the way from New Jersey to sit his ass on the bench for 2 years.

Agree 100% ... Sydir Mitchell needs to take a BIG step.

And the same can be said for Jaray Bledsoe as a disruptor

Gerry, how much do you think Kenny baker can coach these guys up before the season starts?

For me, it's just a continued development scenario ... Bo Davis is a tremendous coach. The foundation has been set ... now Kenny Baker gets the opportunity to help guys ascend.

Kenny Baker probably can help with pass rush this spring/summer headed into the season

I really hope we get to see Bledsoe play up to the freakish talent he has

I still feel like those Michigan follows and  unfollows were breadcrumbs for the next portal time.  I’m really hoping one of those gap feelers up north are trying to come south to the 40.  That is the missing piece and this staff will not remain still if someone comes along.

That would be so big for Texas. He has such disruptive potential. He was close to 290 at the end of the 2023 season. The frame is catching up/developing ... now it's time for the player to emerge.

Not to step into Rods territory, but this crop of DTs doesn’t quite fit PK. Lot of 3 techs with athleticism and a lack of stout bodies that can eat blocks and control the LOS.

You talking on the roster in 2024?

    Or recruits in 2025?

Aaron Bryant needs to contribute with 10-15 per game.

He can be a run game anchor for 10-15 snaps IMO. He now added the weight and strength required. Unless the spring portal changes that opportunity for him.

talking the 2024 roster.  Broughton, Collins, and Bledsoe all fit that athletic 3 tech bucket.
You have Bryant, Sydir, and January that are more 1 techs, but I am not sure they are ready to be pulled out of the oven yet

I do wonder if Bakers arrival will see the DTs run more gap and a half technique..

Yep. Agreed. Obviously, Tiaoalii Savea has to be factored into that equation now.

I haven’t seen him play, so I avoided comment on him. I am not sure if he is more 3 tech or 1 tech

IMO, more of a 1 tech in the scheme

It's interesting to look back at his high school tape as a 250'ish pound left tackle ... and see where he is now physically

From Sweat's comments, sounds like he believes both are going to pleasantly surprise us THIS coming season.
