  • Monday: No Big 12 Teams on Future Schedule

    Bobby Burton

It should come as little surprise, but for those thinking that Texas may attempt to rekindle a game with Texas Tech, Baylor, or any other Big 12 team soon, I am told don't hold your breath.

According to a high-ranking university source, the riff between Texas and the Big 12 has not ebbed in recent months, even if it is no longer a major topic within the athletic department.

Brett Yormark's public pre-season comments in Lubbock and those of deputy Big 12 commissioner Tim Weiser on radio row at Big 12 media days still echo in the memories of Texas power brokers. Those words and actions have swayed the current University of Texas athletic leadership to no longer genuinely contemplate playing any former Big 12 school in football or basketball. Not for the foreseeable future.

When Texas (and Oklahoma) first accepted the invitation to move into the SEC, Tech attempted to publicly negotiate an agreement with the Horns to continue playing an annual football game. The Red Raiders can now put those plans in the rear-view mirror.

"It's just not going to happen," the source said of any Big 12 teams on the future schedule in football or basketball. "The Big 12 made their bed."

The attitude of others toward Texas apparently plays a role in that decision.

"We're the bad guys," the source said. "We're always the bad guys when all we want is what's best for us. Any one of them would have done the same if they had gotten the invite (to the SEC) that we did."

Good. Yormarck doesn't deserve the money we would bring their conference. However, I do feel bad for the economical impact that small businesses in some of those towns like Lubbock, will feel.

To hell with the Big 12 though lol!

Absolutely. They'd also accepted a $300M deal for a dedicated ESPN channel.

Every school acts in its own best interests. It's a thankless job to prop up the Baylors, Iowa States, Texas Techs, etc. Good luck on your own in the real world, Big 12.

Let’s play Arizona just to piss them off

I like this idea to rub it in the individual institutions faces that repeatedly bad mouthed Texas. However, this would benefit the Big XII as a whole which benefits Yormarck, so it is a no go for me for awhile. Yormarck needs to be held accountable for his unnecessary actions towards Texas.

Those schools have been cashing checks we earned for decades.  I wish them well.  For my fellow olds a Mac Davis song about rear view mirrors comes to mind

How about another Mac Davis song? “Its hard to be humble when you are perfect in every way”.

I'd love to play SMU just because the Hateful 8 won't be able to control themselves from a vitriol standpoint.

No need to play SMU, with OU already on the schedule for a game in the DFW area

Yeah I get it, it's just a middle finger to all of the P4 schools in Texas that we won't be scheduling.

You need a Heart Emoji for this, Texas was blamed for all that went wrong - yet it was on the forefront when it came to a Big12 Network, and no one else was on board. Texas' back must be sore from carrying a conference, even when it was down athletically.

We need to lighten up our non-conference, especially if the committee isn't going to award SOS.  Which I doubt they will.

Give me Rice every year, then a directional school (Wofford or Slippery Rock still play football?), Then rotate a brand team in California, Arizona, Colorado.

Great news, thanks for passing it on to us Bobby

    Happy to do it.

BTW - this weekend was the last that Texas will play an event at TCU in any sport for a while. Texas women's basketball put it on the Horned Frogs.

TCU is not the problem here, but it's an interesting mark in time.
