I had a company pay for my flight to interview for a job, that doesn't mean I worked for them. He tried out and didn't get a contract, he didn't get paid because he didn't get a contract. If he didn't get paid, he didn't work for them. Hell, colleges do the same for recruits and they never sign they don't play there. Minor league baseball used to have tryouts all the time. No contract, no pro.

Weird, I've never seen a "volunteer" professional athlete. Don't you typically get paid to be considered a professional at something?
