Texas was in 10 personnel for 8 plays that accounted 83 yards on Saturday vs. Oklahoma.

Good for 10.38 yards per play.

The eight snaps:

  • 10-yard pass to Emmett Mosley V
  • 15-yard pass to Cam Coleman
  • 34-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo
  •  -- halftime --
  • Arch Manning pick-six
  • 9-yard pass to Emmett Mosley V
  • 0-yard run by Hollywood Smothers
  • 15-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Bishop Jr.
  • pass thrown away

The pick-six is the clear blemish. But completions on 6/7 other attempts for 83 yards is a good day given how much the Texas offense struggled throughout the game.

***

Texas is averaging 9.93 yards per play in 10 personnel in the two SEC games where 10 personnel has been utilized.

***

The personnel grouping is responsible for the following explosives in the two games:

  • 34-yard pass
  • 29-yard pass
  • 18-yard pass
  • 15-yard touchdown pass
  • 15-yard pass
  • 14-yard pass

They have to find away to run the ball out of 10 personnel or every defense will know what’s coming.

In theory there should be lighter boxes given spacing in the formation. But that requires the OL to win a lot of 1v1 battles.

We will see a lot of teams blitz in 10P imo, especially given the somewhat dismissal of hot/check routes when defenses show pressure in pre-snap.

That was my next thought too. Teams blitzing because we have no hot routes.

I truly don’t know what is worse, that every person can see that this team is not only built to work mostly out of 10p or that every time we do run it, it produces our biggest plays and our HC refuses to run it until we have to (hence the 4th quarter drive to bishop). Even as a fan at the game, every time they set up in spread, just as an eye test look so much better for a run play. I’m starting to let my mind run and think he’s trying to force a pro style offense to get NFL looks because no way someone can be this ignorant

Would like to use Arch in that as a runner too. Definitely adds difficulty if they have to spy him which devotes one less defender. I’m very frustrated why we’re not attacking the middle if the field and linebackers more this year especially with these blitzes?!

I thought we had some good runs out of 11 personnel with the TE flexed out. 10 personnel and simple spread concepts is the clear answer for arch and this offense. So much quicker and easier to diagnose pre snap. Find the leverage. Get the ball to the WR and let him make a play. Also 10 personnel will lighten up the boxes which can make arch’s legs even more lethal. Sark needs to abandon his philosophy of not wanting the QB to run as well and intentionally tell arch to run it whenever he wants to. You can see arch gets paralyzed in the pocket at times when he wants to run but intentionally tries not to in order to appease Sark. Hence the 3 beyond the line of scrimmage passes this season. The answer is pretty glaring at this point: 10 and 11 personnel and simple spread concepts. 10P also gets bishop on the field who might be our most dynamic player on the roster.  Does sark have the humility to change the identity of his beloved pro style scheme? We’ll see.

By the way, it's unsustainable to run every single play out of 10 personnel, there has to be variations and different personnel packages. But that doesn't mean there can't be more of it.

Especially considered 12 personnel produced 50 yards on 17 snaps for a 2.94 average. Only one of those 17 snaps in 12P gained 7 or more yards. It went for 15 to Emmett Mosley V on the pass he juggled on the sidelines.

I agree with you on all of that. Let’s see if sark takes that route this weekend. I’m hoping for it but not sure if he will.

I don’t understand, Sark’s obsession is explosive plays, yet he’s fixated on 12 personnel which puts 2 lack luster tight ends (in terms of explosiveness) on the field, and it clearly DOESNT WORK.

The pick 6 was definitely on Arch, he had Coleman wide open and instead gifted OU 7 points. But I do think more 10/11 personnel and even some 20/21 would be more efficient to utilize and let Arch actually run some RPO's and let your supposed elite WR's work the opposing defense.

Also Cooper is the best RB on the team. He needs to get way more than 8 carries. That one drive before half he was in, he showed exactly why he should be in more. 2 carries in the second half is criminal.

Not sure if Terry is ready but Brown just isn't cutting it, especially for the things they're asking him to do. Like block a 240/250 LB blitzing through the gaps lol. He should be used sparingly. Cooper, Smothers, Terry..in that order.

The last good TE we had was Helm who was probably the most complete TE we've had and everyone after him was either underutilized or isn't up to scruff, imo. Yet you've got Coleman, Wingo, Mosley and Bishop who could all be out there causing teams havoc. As you said he loves explosive plays but is obsessed with 12 personnel.

Even worse is he'll then motion one of those TE's out wide.

It is infuriating when we have a coach making 10 million reasons a year to figure this out himself, But somehow can’t.

Like most coaches, he's stubborn and wants to do things his way. He still believes that it will work. I'm not sure he'll ever truly change it.

The key with 10 personnel is protection. Good protection in this unit typically results in a good play.

Look how much better they block in the 10 personnel, too. Gives your OL an easier time, lets your WR's work their secondary and makes it easier for Arch to read and hell even run out of.
