Texas Making Things Interesting With Auburn Commit Devin Williams

Auburn DB commit Devin Williams just departed from Austin.

Williams singled out Terry Joseph as the coach on staff he has the best relationship with at the moment.

Though committed to Auburn, Williams said the Texas OV gave him a lot to think about over the next few weeks. He said he’s still committed to Auburn but there will be some conversations with his family coming up.

Texas did a great job presenting the city and the networking opportunities to Williams on the trip.

My hesitation comes about with Williams’ conversation with Sarkisian. Listening to his answer, it did not sound like the normal “Sarkisian really wants me” response we have become accustomed to hearing this month. We will see though.

One great side effect of Sark and UT’s recruiting is the opening of doors down the line. For example, let us say that Williams sticks with his commitment but the Auburn coach leaves or gets fired in a year. The strong relationship he has with Sark and company could lead him back to UT through the portal.

Williams isn’t more than 5-foot-10 which should be noted.

CJ, appreciate you putting a finer point on his actual height. I've seen him listed at 5-9 and 5-11.

Noteworthy, Williams ran 10.65, 10.68 and 10.7 100M as a soph. His highlights show he has fairly long arms for his height and good coverage ability. Also made plays as a WR to suggest good ball skills.

Sounds like TX made a strong move. Good to hear Devin is down to Auby and TX with a future visit for a TX game.

Any height under 5’10” is mismatch look at the WRs most teams are recruiting

I'm with you to a point.

Keep in mind...

Average NFL WR height is 6 FT according to worldmetrics.org. In 2021, NFL.com says around 5-11 193 is the average height and weight of NFL CBs.

Michigan, NC and best D in college, just started a 5-9 CB for multiple seasons. Mike played fantastic and was drafted in the 2nd round.  Mike Sainristil. 5'9" 182 lbs | CB | MICH. 2nd Round 50th Overall. Career Stats (62 games)-108 TAK (70 solo), 10.5 TFLs, 3 SACKS, 7 INTs, 13 PD and 2 FF

Sure 5-10 can be a disadvantage vs taller guys like AD Mitchell, Wingo and Livingstone. But it wouldn't be a concerning height mismatch vs Bond, Bolden, Golden, Cook and Moore.

5-9 Quandre the Giant Diggs had a nice TX career. Had 1 game vs TCU where it was a height mismatch downfield. Still had a great NFL career.

TX commit Caleb Chester CB is listed at 6-1 and 6-2. But Caleb might be at a disadvantage vs the quicker and faster WRs.

Devin ran a 10.65 100M as a soph. Devin is still young so he might make 5-11 and weigh 190. His floor is probably around 5-10 180. Watch his JR highlights, he can play.

If we aren't getting Sanchez or Brew or Lee OOS, speedster Devin Williams might be the right complement to 6-2 Caleb and hopefully Kade Phillips.
