Future NFL Longhorns

Recommended Posts

I wanted to make this post because I love when @Bobby Burton did this last year & believe he said he would do it this year as well. But since I’ve been thinking about just how talented this team is, I wanted to create my own list of players on the current roster who I think will end up being on a NFL roster after their college careers are over. I will sort them by position & tally the number at the end.

QB: (3) Ewers (Jr), Manning (R-Fr), Owens (Fr)

RB: (5) Baxter (So), Blue (Jr), Wisner (So), Clark (Fr), Gibson (Fr) - I’m most doubtful on Gibson long term but I think he will make a roster one day.

WR: (7) Cook (So), Moore (So), Bond (Jr), Wingo (Fr), Bolden (Sr), Golden (Jr), Livingstone (Fr) - Tough to predict the freshmen but I think Livingstone has a real chance so I included him. I also am high on Ryan Niblett long term but couldn’t bring myself to put him down here.

TE: (4) Niblack (Jr), Helm (Sr), Davis (Sr), Washington (Fr) - Of course Juan Davis may or may not make a roster but I’m bullish given the way the coaches have been talking him up this offseason. Also, think there’s a chance Will Randle could make a roster in time.

OL: (11) Banks (Jr), Campbell (Jr), Hutson (Jr), Williams (Jr), Umeozulu (So), Cruz (Fr), Agbo (So), Baker (Fr), Goosby (R-Fr), Chatman (R-Fr), Kibble (Fr) - Hardest group for me to predict just because most of the guys on the list I’m putting based on potential rather than on field production. Really considered Hayden Conner but idk if he will be too much of a tweener for the league.

DL: (5) Collins (Sr), Lole (Sr), Bledsoe (So), January (Fr), Mitchell (R-Fr) - I know, I know Sydir Mitchell being on this list is a major gamble on my part. But I do think he will figure it out. I am completely aware that at this time it looks more likely that he doesn’t make the league but hey gotta take some chances when it comes to these types of predictions.

EDGE: (5) Moore (Jr), Burke (Jr), Simmons (Fr), Umeozulu (Fr), Vasek (R-Fr) - Vasek is certainly dependent on if he can stay healthy. I was really on the fence about Sorrell, but I just don’t know if he has the requisite explosiveness for his body type.

LB: (4) Hill (So), Lefau (So), Smith (Fr), Gullette (R-Fr) - Taking a big chance on some guys due to their potential. Also, Gbenda could but I don’t think he plays well enough in space for the league to value him now.

CB: (8) Muhammad (So), Barron (Sr), Guilbeau (Jr), Holmes (Sr), Roberson (R-Fr), Mack (Fr), Wilson (Fr), Black (Fr) - Another tough group to predict. I think Holmes made big strides this offseason & will get on the NFL radar this year. The young guys, again, are based on the potential they possess. Also, did not included Cole because I haven’t seen enough & his size is a factor.

S: (5) Mukuba (Sr), Williams (So), Filsaime (Fr), Johnson-Rubell (Fr), McDonald (So) - Lots of talent in this room & I think all of the young guys could end up being Day 1 or 2 picks.

Specialists: (2) Auburn (Sr), Kern (Fr) - Will Stone maybe here too but not bold enough to include him.

Class Breakdown:

Seniors: 9

Juniors: 12

Sophomores: 11

Freshmen: 26

Total: 58

Let me know what you think of these projections! I also know these numbers are inflated based on my overall projections & taking chances on some guys with potential but I think this team is that talented. Of note: the freshmen numbers are so high because they take into account the redshirt freshmen from the previous class as well.

My $.02.

I think that's too many freshmen.

I would give only a handful of the freshmen a better than 50-50 shot of making it to the NFL right now. Michael Kern, for example, would be less than a 25-percent chance for me simply because he plays a position where few make it and we've yet to see him perform in a game. As we see more and more of them, those numbers will change.

The true freshmen whose path I really like are:

- Owens

- Wingo

- Livingstone

- Washington

- Cruz

- Baker

- January

- Simmons

- Umeozulu

- Smith

- I have not seen enough of either running back as yet and all of the DBs are TBD for me.

I also really like the frames of Melvin Hills and Nate Kibble on the lines of scrimmage but have not seen enough of them yet either that makes me lean me one way or the other.

I would have to argue Hayden Conner has as much a chance to make it in the league as anyone not named Kelvin Banks, Jake Majors or DJ Campbell. Three years starting experience has to mean something even if there are more talented players below him.

I like Bobby's list of freshmen. I will add Nate Kibble has done nothing but impress since arriving in June.

The issue like for many iOL on the roster currrently, is getting on the field to showcase the talents.

Completely agree, I definitely added my hopes for these guys into a few of the projections. Very few college football rosters all time have produced that many NFL guys but with those guys it’s entirely based on projections into what I think will happen. I also think we have seen in the last 15 years, even with some bad teams & bad years that we have guys who have stuck in the NFL. I think that will happen with some of the fringe guys as well just because of the culture Sark has cultivated.

I tend to agree. I didn’t include just because of his potential tweener status in NFL strength & measurables. But I do think he will get a shot at making a roster for sure.

Morice Blackwell will have a 6-8 year NFL career as a special teamer.

Great callout! I was considering him on the list & some others due to special team considerations & didn’t put Blackwell.

I also think there will inevitably be some transfers out due to the collection of talent & lack of path to the field for some players. But there will be guys who transfer out that end up making the league after that, so that’s also a consideration in having such a large final number.

Pretty remarkable list considering where this conversation was at year one.

Very true. I think Sark is proving (along with the staff he assembled) to be pretty good at this roster construction thing. Elite programs tend to get this part right as a baseline.

Banks loves Mo Blackwell. Hope he can find a place doing that.

Every team is looking for their version of Matthew Slater so if he buys in fully he will get a shot to last in the league! I was slightly surprised Kitan Crawford didn’t explore that angle this year because of how much Banks loved Crawford.

I agree. Considering the purgatory that UT football has been stuck over the last decade plus, the fact that we are discussing upwards of 50+ players on the current roster being on possible NFL rosters is amazing. Once again, very good work by the OP.
