Chris Sweet Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 I was at UT in the VY / Colt era so that'll help age me. Last week, I attended a Holiday concert for my son at Wheatridge High School here in the Denver area and saw the sign below hanging in the gymnasium. I'm curious by nature so looked it up and learned some Longhorn history. Freddie Steinmark (January 27, 1949 – June 6, 1971) was an American college football player for the University of Texas Longhorns. He inspired his teammates by his faith after his diagnosis of bone cancer and subsequent leg amputation during his junior year. Twenty days later, he observed from the sidelines, and his team won the national championship that year.[1] Steinmark has posthumously been the subject of a number of inspirational books and a movie. @Bob Shipley @Bobby Burton 8 1 Quote
Red Five Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 I'm confused. You went to Texas and learned about Freddie Steinmark at a Colorado high school? Although I don't think I knew he was from Colorado, so we we're all learning today. 2 Quote
.45s Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 There is a movie about him on Netflix or Amazon right now called My All American. Gutsy player and an inspiring and sad story. 1 Quote

Yeah, never heard of him, the books, or the movie -- while in school or after until I looked up the name randomly when I saw the sign. I started watching Longhorn football in junior high when Ricky was running wild. Sorry if I lose my Longhorn card if that is blasphemy. 2 Quote

Bobby Burton Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Tremendous story. One of the toughest emotional reads I’ve ever made. I knew so many places in the book from personal experiences, like all the places on campus in the football facility and the student health center to the MDAnderson Cancer Center where my grandfather had to go for a while. 2 Quote

They played a montage of Longhorn moments before every game during that period and Freddie Steinmark was in it. That was how I learned about him Quote

I know about Freddie because my dad was in school with him at Texas and taught my brother and me about Freddie and his story. Sadly, his inspirational story had largely gone untold to many, even great longhorn fans. Thank you for sharing! Freddie was a true inspiration and it's beautiful his story's finally being shared with so many! You keep and proudly carry that longhorn card!! 1 Quote
Burnt Orange Horn Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 (edited) When one watches the Game of the Century, one will see a play where the Arkansas WR is about to go by Steinmark and be wide open for a TD. Steinmark tackled him to draw the PI call to prevent the winning TD. His leg was removed about a week later. Only God knows how he played in that game.
