    Monday Morning Recruiting Nuggets

The Texas Longhorns staff is coming off an extremely busy couple of months on the recruiting front.

January brought a Junior Day with around 150 combined prospects in the 2025 and 2026 classes in Austin.

The staff wrapped up the month with a number of new offers being made in 2025 and 2026, mostly out of state.

OnTexasFootball gets the week going with some Monday morning recruiting nuggets.

    Recruitments Texas can win

Rickey Stewart, RB, Tyler (Texas) Chapel Hill

The Longhorns offered the one-time SMU verbal January 20 at Junior Day. Texas can win this one with a big push, and Steve Sarkisian was by Chapel Hill in January. There has been some Texas chatter in the last few days with Baylor also in play. Stewart’s teammate and friend Demetrius Brisbane Jr. has already flipped from SMU to Baylor.

Kelshaun Johnson, WR, Hitchcock (Texas) High

The explosive wide receiver is considered a Texas lean headed into the spring. Johnson attended Junior Days at Texas and Texas A&M in January. The offensive scheme, the quarterback room and Texas trajectory are key reasons why every program is chasing the Longhorns. A decision is expected prior to his senior season.

Kiotti Armstrong, TE, Jasper (Texas) High

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Southeast Texas tight end is considered a Texas lean headed into the spring. He made Junior Day visits to Texas A&M and Texas in January. He will head back to Texas March 22 with his 7v7 team prior to a tournament in the Austin area. Armstrong currently plans to make June official visits and announce a decision around the start of the 2024 season.

OL John Mills planning June OV

John Mills, IOL, San Francisco (Calif.) St. Ignatius

Mills attended the Texas Junior Day January 20, and is planning to make an official visit in June. He has spoke with Texas OL coach Kyle Flood about visit dates. Mills also attended the Florida Junior Day January 27. Washington (a number of family members were athletes at UW) and Michigan also remain very much in the mix. Nebraska is working to make a push as well.

Speaking of June official visits, the last weekend of the month will be the big visit weekend for the Longhorns. Two prospects already expected to make official visits that last weekend are Lewisville (Texas) High’s Michael Fasusi and Dickinson (Texas) High’s IOL Tyler Thomas.

    One more note

Hightower (Texas) High 2025 CB/DB Kade Phillips attended Texas Junior Day January 20 with hopes of an offer. That has yet to happen. Phillips was back on campus at Texas A&M Saturday. This recruitment is looking like a Texas A&M vs. LSU final barring a major change.

    Great weekend summary! Thanks Gerry.

How do you see John Mills in comparison with the in-state crop of O-Linemen? Is he a special talent?

I dod think he's in the conversation with the top IOL's in Texas. He should be a 4-star prospect when all is said and done. Seeing him in Person January 20 ... broad shoulders, long arms and is well proportioned. Very strong early eval by Kyle Flood ...

Texas, Washington, Michigan ... three playoff teams offered him early on. Quite the compliment to what he can develop into.

    Gerry,

do you have a sense of the pecking order at Offensive Tackle (behind Fasusi), especially now that the Bridgeland kid is off the board?  Are there any out of state OT that we should realistically be monitoring?  Thanks for all you do.

Johnson running 10.49 (wind-aided) at regional meet as a sophomore

Johnson, Lockett, Moore and Marsh are the top group in state for me.

I like them a lot a substantial bit more than the Mater Dei kid, Harris.

    Don't necessarily disagree.

    Lockett is very intriguing.

Sark's going to have a strong SoCal presence too, however.

@Gerry Hamiltonhelp me understand the attention/love for Stewart. I don’t think I’ve questioned or wondered about many kids if any. This one has me a little perplexed. I guess as a 2nd back but I’m not seeing it.

Texas loves Akylin Dear out of Quitman, Miss. ... just not sure how realistic that is right now.

For me, Stewart would be that No. 2 RB in a class.
