25-26 Director's Cup Thread
HelloThere replied to DirectorsCupUpdates's topic in On Texas Football Forum
It will start to change soon, but before it was VERY rare if anyone on XC had a full scholarship, most would be small partial ones and hope to find some academic help as well. In XC it was well known that you wanted to be fast and smart if you wanted any money for college. Now some schools would use their assets on distance and that would be their chance at conference or their calling card. Schools like Northern Arizona, Tulsa, BYU, etc. There were some for sure. But those schools would never have any strength in the speed disciplines. You basically had to pick a lane. Tennis, golf, even baseball and softball were the same when it came to mostly partial scholarships if anything. Way more walk ons than you would think. With the changes, teams with money and funding can now have full scholarships for anyone on the roster. Of course, with the new roster limits in track, there will still have to be decisions made on if you want to use them on speed or distance, but there are also full XC scholarships available if a school wants to use them and try to win at distance only. Texas is not fully funding all of the new scholarships yet, no one is, but over time they expect to. This is why I say we can become more competitive if we want. But it will also take spending big money overseas as well. Schools like TTU are bringing over 27 year old, Olympic age "freshman" to compete in distance. It is not illegal, even though I disagree with anyone over 25 competing in college sports, but that is what it is going to take. You will need a roster with some international athletes to compete in distance. The hard part about distance recruiting is you can go get the best runner in America as a high school senior and they may not pan out. Distance running is weird about that. It takes years to truly develop and you have to be running all year long, some well over 100 miles a week in season, which can cause injury. It is just a very tough sport to be consistently good at. -

It is an extremely hard sport to recruit, but with all the changes in rosters and scholarship limits I can see Texas becoming competitive if they want to. Before, it was hard to have a great distance and sprint program. XC is always just an extension of your distance program for track. Now they can fully fund the program, again, if they want to. -
Just a part of the game, if you have them and don’t have any timeouts you have to challenge. We do the same thing. I kinda like their coach honestly. I agree it slows things down but it is within the rules. What an amazing match AGAIN! These girls have ice water in their veins. Nothing seems to phase them. Props to Louisville too, heck of a match. Love how Elliott is letting these girls play through adversity. It will continue to pay off. I mean we are 5-0 and our wins have come against three Top 10 teams and an additional Top 15 team.

Tuesday - The Future of College Sports
HelloThere replied to Bobby Burton's topic in On Texas Football Forum
A guy who played the game and is a self made billionaire is a “hack” to some people because he supports TTU. I think it is reasonable to be skeptical of the plan, everyone should. However, I see it more of a guy trying to get a conversation started because EVERYONE knows the current format isn’t going to last. The lawsuits will never end and things will continue to change more and more. Sounds to me like he is part of a group that wants to find a more permanent solution. If this was a UT alum doing the same thing many here would support it and other fan bases would completely disregard because of the same reasons he is being dismissed. The truth is, conversations have to start somewhere and he is 100% right that public institutions belong to the people and the people’s interest should be protected first. -
I am so glad Sark has welcomed Mack to the program...
HelloThere replied to Califashorn75's topic in On Texas Football Forum
The committee was enamored with Patterson’s presentation and how he ran pro organizations. They felt that was the way colleges sports would be going and wanted to be ahead of the curve. (Man, were they wrong) Luck was a shoe in until then. Patterson would have preferred to keep Brown, although you are right that he was willing to pull the trigger if needed. But that wasn’t the reason for the hire. Luck would have pulled the trigger too if he was told to. 100% agree that leadership was lacking from multiple positions at the time and DeLoss had a part in it, although he wanted Luck not Patterson. Powers was a major liability in all of it. My major point is that these decisions, especially Patterson were the biggest reasons for our decade of mediocrity, not Mack Brown. Patterson interviewed coaches that had used every connection they had to get the Texas job and they walked away after talking to him. Multiple coaches. It was that bad, but people really want to think Nick Saban was going to leave Alabama to come into that situation. -

This is false and will always be false no matter how many times people say it and believe it. Hate to tell yall this but the “Big Cigar” or whatever his name was fed the fan base multiple lies. Nick Saban was not going to work for Steve Patterson. It still amazes me that Mack takes all the blame for what Steve Patterson did to this program. Mack left it better than he found it. Once game away from playing for the Big 12 Championship. Patterson came in and completely wrecked everything from top to bottom. I cannot think of one thing he did that helped Texas in any way. Billy Lucci couldn’t have wrecked this athletic department worse than Patterson did. A complete disaster that took years to recover from. But let’s blame Mack Brown. It is so dumb. -

Yet his run is the standard we are still trying to get back to. Mack is the second greatest coach this program has ever had and brought us back to prominence. Completely changed the perception of the program and helped build the brand. If VY was the only reason then what was Colt? What was Corey Redding, DJ Johnson, Cedric Benson, Ricky coming back to win the Heisman, Shipley, Cosby...just to name a few that came because of Mack and still love him today and rave about him (RIP Cedric). I mean, the man did a lot for us and he is a great ambassador for the program even today. -
Kalen Deboer: 8-4 fired?
HelloThere replied to Texas fan in Georgia's topic in On Texas Football Forum
It would be a really dumb move to fire him this year. He HAS won everywhere he has been and these are not his guys. Who are you going to replace him with? He is about as sure of a bet as you can get in college football. I give him some time to get it set up his way with HIS QB. Following Saban is not easy first of all, but lets not forget one of the reasons Saban said in an interview on why he retired. He was doing exit interviews and players kept talking about how much more money they needed rather than what they could do to be better. Sounds like Saban himself had a culture problem brewing and DeBoer walked into it. -
That a truly insane number. We did 9 million with Michigan last year. I was expecting 10-12. The hype was real. There were four games that went over 10 million this weekend. Guess everyone was ready for some football.

It is year 5, Sark has his guys. He has elite talent, he has an elite defense, he has to coach better on offense, particularly in the red zone in games against elite teams. Simple as that. That said, I am not going to use the first game of this season as an example against the other games he used. We were MUCH more experienced last year across the board, so Georgia x2 and Ohio State last year are different categories to me. But they still make his point. To me, we need to see where this offense is as the season progresses before I hold yesterday against him.

Really enjoyed it. Thanks for having us out!

Atleast you know Bobby doesn’t read your posts!

Yes give it some time, many ticket holders that are getting ou tickets still haven’t gotten to choose them. I think that lasts until the end of the month. Most tickets picked already are the best ones. So if you wait you will have more selection and better pricing.

If the expert witness is correct and SFA is 68% women enrollment but women only have 35% of varsity roster spots, then this case was dead on arrival. That is a strict rule of Title IX as far as I can tell. That alone threw out their argument before the court. It will be a much more impactful case when a school that fully complies with all Title IX rules actually cut a women’s sports program due to budgetary concerns.

I don’t know the exact figure but he was offered a deal to go to ND among others.
-
I like Jalen but he is not a max player IMO nor do I think he will develop into one. He will be a very good player but I am fine offloading that contract for KD for sure. The Rockets have an elite coach, some pieces that are elite defensively and a lot of talented pieces. They need a scorer and there are few better than KD. I love the move.

That stat should also include winning 15 tournaments and three majors before 28. Those aren’t the only ones to win three majors before 28 .

I have been on all boards and Bobby was the reason I joined every single one of them. I am not really into site wars and generally like the different sites for different reasons. That said, I have kept all but OB, I cannot be a part of anything Ketch is a part of. I respect some of his business decisions and he obviously built something special for a time being but he ruined that and made the experience over there unbearable. So if he is involved, then I am out of whatever that is.

While some of this is technically true, the way it is presented is not. Mack was deservedly hurt by the way it went down and did not like Patterson. His ire was directed at Patterson and Fuenves and not the program. His warnings were about the way Patterson was running things. Furthermore, he didn’t have to bash anything to the BMD’s you are referencing, they were plenty mouthy and unhappy on their own. Many of them saw the writing on the wall with Patterson before the world did. I know of several recruits personally he told to stay committed and they deserved to play at Texas and should see who they hired. He never bashed the program to a single person, player or recruit I know. If all of this was true his former players and those who worked with him and continued working for Texas wouldn’t adore him like they do. Especially the ones who played for him at the end of his run. He could have handled things better in some regards but to act like he began undermining and bashing the program to anyone who would listen is factually incorrect.
-
Still hilarious to me that everyone blames Mack for “burning the program down” when Steve Patterson is the one who truly burnt the program and athletic department down. Mack did not go out right, all agree with that, but he went 8-5, 9-4 and 8-5 his last three years. Definitely not good, but still better than he found it after a legendary run. Considerably better than the next several years after he left. He also gets the blame for Nick Saban not coming, which he had a part, but Nick Saban was not coming here to work for Steve Patterson. Zero chance.

Men’s Swimming & Diving NCAA Finals Meet
HelloThere replied to GoHorns1's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Texas is basically a 9th place finish in the relay away from the Natty due to our current lead: We are very close to bringing home the trophy. Definitely no worse than 2nd right now but another championship is in sight! -
So he sends Peyton a text about the 2 minute drill and gets a 12:00 voicemail response...that is hilarious and perfectly on brand! 😆
