My favorite of these games above was the 2008 game. So how did the Texas Longhorns do it? The 2008 Red River Shootout was an absolute classic, finishing as a 45–35 triumph for No. 5 Texas over No. 1 Oklahoma. At the time, it set the record for the highest-scoring game in rivalry history. Texas pulled off the upset with elite quarterback efficiency, a game-changing special teams play, and a physical second-half surge that wore down the Sooners. Colt McCoy’s Surgical Precision: While Oklahoma's Sam Bradford had a massive day stats-wise, Colt McCoy was the most efficient player on the field. He finished 28-of-35 for 277 yards and a touchdown while adding 31 yards on the ground—crucially throwing zero interceptions. He leaned heavily on his trusted receiving duo, with Jordan Shipley catching 11 passes for 112 yards and Quan Cosby hauling in 9 receptions for 122 yards. The Jordan Shipley Spark: Early in the second quarter, Oklahoma took a commanding 14–3 lead and looked poised to run away with the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Jordan Shipley fielded the ball and took it 96 yards to the house. It was the ultimate momentum-shifter that woke up the burnt-orange side of the Cotton Bowl and proved Texas could match the Sooners' explosive energy. Muschamp's Run Defense & Earl Thomas: Under first-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, the Texas defense gave up a lot of passing yards to Bradford but completely shut down the Sooners' ground game, limiting Oklahoma to just 48 rushing yards. This forced the Sooners to become entirely one-dimensional. Furthermore, freshman safety Earl Thomas intercepted Bradford twice, directly halting crucial Oklahoma drives. Wearing Down the Sooners in the 4th: Oklahoma led 28–20 early in the third quarter and later 35–30 in the fourth quarter, but Texas simply outlasted them physically. Running back Chris Ogbonnaya had a career day, ripping off 127 rushing yards on 15 carries to consistently keep the chains moving. Short-yardage fullback Cody Johnson closed it out, punching in three rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead score and the final dagger in the fourth quarter. Texas scored the final 15 unanswered points of the game, flipping a 35–30 deficit into a 45–35 victory and securing the No. 1 spot in the nation the following week. A Beautiful Game. Hook'em! 🤘 🤠 🇨🇱

In the last 25 years (2001–2025), the lower-ranked (or unranked) team has won the Red River Rivalry game 7 times. This game's historical predictability routinely gets thrown out the window, with underdogs pulling off massive upsets. These games over the last quarter-century highlight instances when the team trailing in the AP Poll defied expectations: The TEXAS Longhorns lead this stat 6 to 1. Hook'em! 🤘 🤠 🇨🇱

OTF Premium Wild Stat – OU Without Defensive/Special Teams Scoring
Paul L replied to CJ Vogel's topic in On Texas Football Forum
I agree and that’s why I think it is important that we get the ball out of arch’s hands as quick as possible. At least at the beginning, let’s take 4 or 5 yard passes and then later on we can try and stretch the field. -
I've got Indiana 31-24

I put $40 on Matt Rhule and team to upset Indiana. Who yall got?

My biggest worry Saturday is OU's trick plays. They can't run it (131st in the country, under 3 yards a carry), they're awful on third down, and they've put the ball on the ground 10 times already. Meanwhile, our defense is holding teams under 100 rushing yards and just sacked Tennessee 10 times. Venables knows what he's up against. I'm expecting a flea flicker, a reverse pass, a fake punt near midfield, anything to steal a possession or a cheap touchdown. If one of those hits, the whole stadium changes. Their crowd wakes up, their guys start believing, and all of a sudden a team that couldn't move the ball is hanging around in the fourth quarter. We almost learned that the hard way in Knoxville. Tennessee got an extra possession off an onside kick that never should have stood, and we nearly let that game slip. Sark's right about running the ball and winning the turnover battle. But this is Texas-OU. A 2-2 team can make life miserable for No. 1 with a couple plays nobody saw coming. Stay home. Keep contain. Don't bite on every fake. And special teams better be locked in on every kick. Make them earn every point and we win going away. Hand them a couple cheap touchdowns and it's anybody's game. Hook 'em.

# 5 Penalties! We continue to do dumb things, often at the worst possible moment. In a game with emotions running this high we have play with more discipline. # 6 Special Teams. Against Tennessee we gave up a punt return for a TD that got them back in the game, we effed up our long punt return when a returner called for an illegal fair catch, and we muffed an on-side kick that gave Tennessee one last chance (I know it was an illegal kick but it wasn't called and we still should have covered it). Hook 'em!

It's the most wonderful time of the year again: Hate Week! It dawned on me today that OU did exactly as well against Georgia as Arkansas did: both lost by 28. Yikes. Congrats to @PaulieD for winning Week 5 with a record of 4-2! It was a crowded week: eleven of you finished 4-2, and PaulieD's picks were in first. Week 6 of Hold the Mayo is open. Seven SEC games, each one picked against the spread. Person with the best record Holds the Mayo next week. Tiebreaker to first one to submit their picks. Texas A&M @ Missouri (-2.5), 11:00 AM CT South Carolina @ Florida (-14.5), 11:45 AM CT Texas (-9.5) vs Oklahoma (Dallas), 2:30 PM CT Ole Miss (-9.5) @ Vanderbilt, 2:30 PM CT Tennessee (-13.5) @ Arkansas, 3:15 PM CT LSU (-10.5) @ Kentucky, 6:00 PM CT Georgia (-0.5) @ Alabama, 6:30 PM CT Picks for each game lock at its own kickoff, and you can change your picks any time between now and then. Changing a pick won't cost you your spot in the tiebreaker either. The Season tab has everyone's running record since Week 3: stance.fm/mayo?week=season Below are some highlights from Week 5: stance.fm/mayo p.s. it's 2:09 and OU STILL SUCKS!!! Hook 'em 🤘
