Will Texas Spend Big in the Portal?
Assistant Regional Manager replied to TexasFanatic's topic in On Texas Football Forum
We are returning difference makers at QB and pass rusher, and that is about half the battle in college football. This roster is not as bad as some try to make it out to be. And returning players are allowed to get better. Did anyone have Parker Livingstone, Brandon Baker, Ethan Burke and Alex January being plus players on this team a year ago? We have holes to fill but I’m not sure I would classify it as “major overhaul”. -
I’ll say at RB, it would be nice to get a guy like kewan lacy, Caleb Hawkins, or Bryson Washington if he doesn’t head to the NFL. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Hawkins follow Morris to OKSt though. At WR, Jayce Brown would be interesting if he’s cheap enough. I think he’d do well in this offense. The Scudero guy from SJSU is tiny, but would also be interesting if he could survive a hit or two.

I was thinking about this last night, and it's almost undoubtedly Arkansas right?

If there’s not a major overhaul, next year will be worse. We don’t have enough difference makers at the skill positions or secondary, and we need at least 3 OL additions. That doesn’t even address the other needs. -
Does this mean there is 2 “Hi’s” out there or was one the OT we got and now there is only 1?

Ewers was definitely asked to move on by the staff. That’s not even debated. And yeah the others would have required massive investment to keep around for a season but that sounds like what Ohio State did in keeping their 2024 squad together. It obviously paid off. -

All four of those were going to the NFL no matter what. They either believed they would be early round picks or were not interested in returning to school (Cam W.). -

Nothing about this feels like a light portal cycle. The breadcrumbs say Texas is gearing up for a full correction year. The back-channeling alone suggests this is already moving before the portal even opens. RB still needs a true lead dog. OL needs immediate adults, not projects — at least two guards and a swing tackle. DB and safety are clearly on the shopping list too. Also, a big DL. That’s not patchwork. That’s structural repair. This roster isn’t getting “tuned up” in January. It’s getting remechanized. Now the only question that matters: does the staff finally cash the right checks on the right players?
