My thoughts: DBs - Until we play a seasoned QB, we don't really know if our DBs have gelled and their communication is comparable to last year. OSU was protecting Sayin. He wasn't asked to scan the middle of the field and make a decision. LBs - Seemed assignment sound to me. I think we have a good group that's only going to get better. DLs - Very good overall against the runs. Didn't step up on goal line a short yardage situations but perhaps we've been a little spoiled from last year. I like our DTs and I think they are only going to get better as the coaching staff figures out the right combinations. EDGEs- I'm not sure. Sayin did very little dropping back and scanning the field. I'm going to assume we have a very good pass rush though. OSU pretty much conceded that to us via their scheme. Offensive Line - I am thrilled with our run game in general but as usual, once we are in obvious short yardage situations, something happens and I am baffled. Sark needs a short yardage consultant. RBs - Very impressive. Other teams aren't going to have the same defensive back field OSU had and are going to be forced to cheat their way up to the line of scrimmage. That will play into Arch's strengths. WRs TEs - I was surprised how little they got opened, but again, OSU's defensive backs are the strength of the team. So I'm not sure how I feel yet. I'm excited about Livingston though. Wingo needs to grow a little. QB - Ugh. IMO, Quinn Ewers had one strength and only one strength - hitting receivers in stride with short passes. Arch is inaccurate and puts way too much mustard on his short throws. He needs to calm the eff down and watch some film on Ewers. I'm not saying Ewers was a great QB (he had zero pocket presence, zero ability to improvise and couldn't throw a deep ball) but Arch HAS to improve on those short passes Sark designs to scheme WRs open. If he doesn't do that, we are going to get behind the chains way to often. I simply don't know what to think of Arch yet. I'm anywhere from "He'll learn from this and become a good QB" to "I hope KJ Lacy matures fast." I'm just shocked.

What’s concerning to me and probably others is how many times have we heard either Sark and staff were out coached, the other team was better prepared, or the other team’s game plan was better. I’m not saying Sark isn’t the guy to bring us to the top, but yesterday, Georgia last year, both semifinal games may be the ceiling. He wasn’t a head coach long enough at any other stops to make a determination. I can tell you I don’t like hearing we were out coached, other team was better prepared, or there game plan was better. I guess at least they aren’t calling us soft anymore.

OTF Premium Interesting Arch Manning Trend from the Opener (Sunday AM)

Honestly Arch tried multiple times and missed. I think he was just hyped up and gripping the ball tight yesterday -
Where does Sark belong?
Quinncent McManning, Jr. replied to Forrest J.'s topic in On Texas Football Forum
Didn't mean any disrespect.. I actually completely agree with your categorization coaches.. very well thought out. I'm just saying we as fans jump to labelling coaches and players at that time, when things change. Sark is on a rapid trajectory now, making it that much more difficult. If you asked the same question 2 years ago after 5-7.. what would people say? Is he not the same dude 2 years later with a playoff team in 2 straight years? I'm not sold that he is the next savior either, but he's not a finished product. Let's look at your 3rd category from a football standpoint, which could be broken down to more subcategories. Patterson, Gundy, Peterson (long time well regarded smart coaches that have maximized non-blue blood powers.. never had chance to coach at the highest levels with the best talent).. what would happen if they went to an LSU or Bama like a Nick Saban? Could drastically change how you perceive them. Strong - bust at Texas, bust at USF (basically the same category as Tom Herman, probably the only one that doesn't belong in the same caliber of coach with the other guys really) Riley - born on 3rd base, QB scheme savant, not a great coach at 2 blue bloods Leach - offensive scheme savant, had a maximal ceiling as a HC given results at Tech and MSU Kelly, Beamer - Solid coaches, Beamer never got over the hump while VT was relevant, Kelly hasn't yet at 2 historic programs either.. we'll see if he can eventually get enough talent ala Mack Brown Kiffin - like Sark in age and ability to win in the SEC, but without the trajectory. -
Do you know Sabans history at Michigan St., LSU, and Bama? Do you know he’s won over 80% of the college games he coached? Turned them all around and made them into contenders. Won titles with multiple schools and sustained excellence at the one place he made home. He left the NFL because it’s a different game. He’s a college coach and he realized that. You do know that Strong coached before he came to UT right? This wasn’t his first gig. He was on his way to making Louisville into what Patterson made TCU to be, winning over 70% of his games and going 3-1 in bowl games. His mistake was thinking he’s a Gifted & Talented coach when he’s not. Shoulder have stayed at Louisville and became a legend like Patterson and Gundy.

James Franklin is the most obvious answer. Other options include Brian Kelly, Marcus Freeman, Dan Lanning, and 2019-2023 Ryan Day.
-
I’m happy with our progress. He’s gotten us back faster than Mack. I’ll reassess after the season.
-
Let me stop you on Klubnik. That dude ran for his life from pressure. LSU came after him constantly with blitzes from all over. Arch, OTOH, just flat missed guys on several occasions. Arch would have been sacked by LSU so many times it wouldn’t have been funny. Clemson had no run game and their Oline isn’t anything special. Just keeping it real.
-
It’s truly a big season for Sark, with the understanding you appreciate what he has done at Texas The place you never want to be as a fan in analysis of a program is “the players change, but the results and issues are the same” Then there is only one answer to your main question.
-
-
And Franklin belongs in the third group until proven otherwise.

There’s a lot of comments. And I haven’t read any of them. Just here to share a few of my thoughts to vent to my OTF family after a tough day of digesting. Sorry in advance for the long post. This does not feel like the end of the world by no measure. If you look at the stat line, penalties might have been the deciding factor, despite how terrible some of Arch’s throws were. On that note, when have we seen an inaccurate ball from Arch prior to this game? As cool as he is, I think he felt the true pressure of being a starting QB in a competitive college setting. He will settle down and start delivering balls on time/schedule like we’re used to seeing. We cannot rely on his wheels to win games. CJ Baxter’s return was a breath of fresh air. That dude is a stud. But Tre lead the stat line. He was elusive and just doesn’t quit on his runs. We have a true tandem set this year of quality backs. Oline looks good. This was a good pash rush defense. Arch did avoid some pockets that collapsed - last year we might have seen a few more QE sacks or balls thrown out of bounds just because of Arch’s athleticism. We miss the soft touch of QE. Arch needs to back off on the heat for his intermediate throws. Honestly, Quinn wins this game easily for Texas. That’s a hard pill to swallow, because Arch is currently and will be the future of this program. It’s just the difference between both players at this moment in time. No mention of Taafe, Simmons, or Hill this game. That’s not gonna happen again Seeing Littleton ball out was super fun to watch. Taking these massive OOC games always feels like a risk. It’s good for the sport, and it’s good for TV, but I’m always on the fence whether or not it’s good for the team. Let these guys get some reps in before playing the best teams in the league. I don’t think this game was of no consequence. Now we HAVE to beat A&M, OU, and one of UGA/UF for good seeding in the CFP we can even be tripped up and miss a CFP spot all together. It only seems unfair because other teams don’t take on the same challenge.

OTF Premium Thoughts on Arch Manning
diegozanna20 replied to Gerry Hamilton's topic in On Texas Football Forum
There we go with the overreactions, the fact you're even thinking this lets me know you're being too emotional about this loss. Yeah let's completely deminsh the confidence of a young QB making his first road game start for an unproven senior that played at temple, surely he'll handle better the 110 thousand fans screaming and the nation calling for him to be inducted in the HOF before playing a meaningful snap. What a frustrating fan base we are. How the hell is he supposed to learn to play in an enviroment like this if we pull him? How is supposed to know what failure and disappointement feels like when you've let your team down if you pull him? Don't wanna make generalizations but Peyton wouldn't have become the player he was if they benched him in his first season with the colts. THE KID HAS GOT TO LEARN, LET HIM LEARN. Like @Gerry Hamilton said, he'll get better, we just have to wait and see how much and how long that'll take. The talent is there, he's gotta turn the easy stuff into automatics and get as much reps as possible to make the game slow down. One last thing: if there's something constant within Arch's game is improvement. Whether it's throughout a game or after a game he's always made improvements. Have faith. -
The bigger concern is arch and his throwing motion change. If his issue is that he loses his mechanics when nervous, he’s done. That’s a death knell for any qb. That’s the entire thing for me. It simply can’t be his kryptonite. If it truly is, you’d have to move on. It’s the equivalent of a kicker’s yips. The problem is he had decent time more often than not. It was almost he was trying to win the game with each throw. The real issue will be if arch has a permanent mental thing in games, we’re cooked because there’s zero chance sark benches him. What is super concerning for me is that maybe we now know why arch wasn’t put in last year for a 50% injured quinn. This is what has me thinking it’s not a one game thing. Yesterday wasn’t a qb struggling against this elite defense. OSU will lose games this year if the other team can score. The defense was okay. We were worse than they were good. Hell, aggies using lsu reed would have scored more yesterday. Something bigger feels off to me and I don’t normally leave bad games like this. Maybe it’s as simple as arch did this to arch vs the defense dictating it. Sark trying to mask it with they were elite at disguising coverage still is insufficient. With the exception of 2 drives late, his mechanics and throws were off all game regardless of coverage or pressure. Yeesh!

Your list has contradictions - for example, Saban doesn’t belong in the first category, he left the NFL because he couldn’t cut it. Also, Charlie Strong in 3? Did you watch the 2010’s? Which underlies the problem of your list, there are “tweeners.” Sark is probably a tweener between your “categories” 2 & 3.
