David Latiolais
If Jim H leaves Michigan, but doesn't announce it till Friday or next week, what happens to the players who enter the portal but can't sign till after January 30th? Does TX just lose out on those guys? It takes 48 hrs to have your name show up in the portal, and only leaves like 2 or 3 days to get with a player have them come visit and then sign? Are there any special rules that Texas can take these kids get them enrolled in school after January 30th?
horns96
I think Catalon came in after the add/drop deadline last year, but there aren't any special rules at UT to accommodate the NCAA's lack of oversight, only favors at this point.
Papasaun
I believe coaches can get an exception past the deadline.

Those players would have to enroll in summer at Texas but would be on scholarship at Michigan until then. Michigan would have to honor their scholarships through the semester.

And it would also depend if they’re a grad student or undergrad.
ArchMania
Have to believe this timing is absolutely by design to protect Michigans roster & if so a smart move but could end up costly with future recruits. Restraining potential portal players is a risky venture.
HookemTexas
Wouldn't that strategy only be able to protect Michigan's roster for 1 semester? As I think the players could portal after Spring as well. It could allow the next coach to build relationships to try to mitigate the impact so still could be effective.
