11 Days Until Kickoff: DJ Headlines A Loaded Group

We’re down to 11 days until Texas kicks off the 2026 season and No. 11 has been worn by some phenomenal players.

Derrick Johnson headlines the group. One of the best defensive players in school history, DJ finished with 458 tackles, a school-record 65 tackles for loss, won the Butkus Award and Nagurski Trophy, and was a unanimous All-American.

Sam Ehlinger finished his Texas career with 11,436 passing yards, 94 passing touchdowns and 33 rushing touchdowns while becoming one of the defining Longhorns of his era.

Major Applewhite threw for 8,353 yards and 60 touchdowns, won Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 1998 and was the 1999 co-Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

Duke Carlisle quarterbacked Texas to the 1963 national championship and was also named team MVP and an Academic All-American that season.

And P.J. Locke III rounds out the group after appearing in 47 games with 31 starts, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors and serving as a team captain.

You should have also mentioned that Duke Carlisle actually played both ways at times during his Texas career.  Playing both ways was done quite often in those days.  I may be remembering incorrectly but I seem to remember Texas beating Baylor and Joe Trull in Memorial Stadium (was not DKR yet) and Carlisle having a game saving interception.  I am old so my memory may not be remembering that correctly and I didn't take the time to look it up.

Glad you brought that up. Duke did play both ways quite a lot. That interception was a fantastic play against an All American Quarterback and receiver. Hook’em 🤘🏻🤘🏻

I was at that game,  one of the most exciting games I have ever seen. Carlisle was put in at DB on that last drive and intercepted Trull in the end zone to secure the win. 7 to 3 Texas. Defensive/field position games can be exciting.

BTW  Baylor QB was named  Don Trull.

I meant to mention one other thing about that game.  Back in those days the endzone was open seating for what they called the knothole gang.  All kids could get into the endzone seats for just a dollar.  My parents had season tickets and so I basically grew up in the knothole gang watching games.  

There were two Trull brothers.  I met one of them at a Baptist kids camp a few years after that game.   I just saw that Don's brother Jonathan was convicted of murder in 98.  The Trull that I met was in the 60's so maybe I met the one convicted of murder, who knows.  

By the way, I remember the interception in the end zone that sealed that win.  I was also there.
