Just started looking through statewide scores and was immediately shocked to learn that Aledo, Duncanville, and SOC lost. Can not remember the last time all of those lost on the same day. I guess I better be prepared as I continue going through scores.

I remember when Saxton got knocked out with a knee to the helmet against TCU. I believe the final was 6-0 TCU and if I remember correctly, the weather was horrendous.

I meant to mention one other thing about that game. Back in those days the endzone was open seating for what they called the knothole gang. All kids could get into the endzone seats for just a dollar. My parents had season tickets and so I basically grew up in the knothole gang watching games. There were two Trull brothers. I met one of them at a Baptist kids camp a few years after that game. I just saw that Don's brother Jonathan was convicted of murder in 98. The Trull that I met was in the 60's so maybe I met the one convicted of murder, who knows. By the way, I remember the interception in the end zone that sealed that win. I was also there.

You should have also mentioned that Duke Carlisle actually played both ways at times during his Texas career. Playing both ways was done quite often in those days. I may be remembering incorrectly but I seem to remember Texas beating Baylor and Joe Trull in Memorial Stadium (was not DKR yet) and Carlisle having a game saving interception. I am old so my memory may not be remembering that correctly and I didn't take the time to look it up.

I was on South Congress when it happened and my father was down at the University. In those days you could see the tower from where I was. No skyscrapers in those days. Very memorable day. I guess I was 14 that day.

I read an article many, many years ago that was mainly about Butkus but several NFL players chimed in and said the hardest hitter in the NFL was Nobis and not Butkus. Truly a legend.

This discussion should also consider the three man backfields during the wishbone years. Wooster, Bertleson and I am not certain but it may have been Koy. Also important to remember that for his freshman season, Earl Campbell started out at fullback but I do not remember the two halfbacks.

I was in attendance for Leaks game in Dallas against SMU. It was a blowout and Leaks had been pulled. When coach Royal learned that he was close to 300 yards in the game he put him in for one final play. On that final play for Leaks, he broke it up the middle and scored from 50 yards out.

I saw Doug English when he was in Junior High school in Dallas. I was a friend of his sister Tina. Doug has always been as good of a human being as he has been a football player. It is hard for me to imagine a better number 74 in Texas history. The Detroit Lions would also second my opinion when it comes to his ability as a football player.
