Decision day: Jordan Pope

The Texas Longhorns top target in the NCAA transfer portal in this cycle will announce his decision today.

Oregon State transfer PG/CG Jordan Pope will announce between Texas and Texas A&M today. Pope, 6-1.5 and 170 pounds, made visits to both schools last week and there is a level of confidence in Austin ahead of the decision.

Should Pope pick Texas, the Longhorns will have constructed a back court that is versatile, multiple ball handlers, multiple shooters from three, size to play big, athleticism, depth and very good offensive feel.

Jordan Pope by the numbers

Pope averaged 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game over 64 games (63 starts) in two seasons. He connected on 43.9% from the field, 37.4% from three and 86.1% from the foul line. He starred as a sophomore averaging 17.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 2023-24. That included 45.1% from the field, 37.1% from three (66 makes) and 87.9% from the free throw line (94 of 107).

She’s a great pickup on the wing. Extremely versatile & doesn’t need the ball a ton to impact games. I could see her being Brea Beal for next years team, with more offensive ability.

I'm a big, big, big, big fan of this dude ... what say you @Jordan91 and @bierce

He can definitely get it going. It will be interesting to see him with better players around him. I love that Texas has two legit point guards. Getting close to being able to take four players out and substitute four players.

My only reservation about Pope is on the defensive end.  0.7 steals per 40 minutes.  Steal totals aren't the sole or best measure of a defender, but that is a ridiculously low number.  Five blocks in his career in 2200+ minutes.  Almost non-existent as a rebounder.

I want Pope.  He'll be a great addition to the offense.  But when a guy is less than Abmas when it comes to all stats other than points, one has to temper one's expectations at least somewhat.

Gerry, you list Onyema as a "PF".

I have never seen him play facing the bucket or outside the paint.

He is the reason Texas needs another BIG.  Shedrick cannot play 40 min/p/g and Onyema provides nothing against a decent team but fouls given.

I am not usually one to take a harsh tone, but I just haven't seen anything from Onyema. Get Cam Williams to play after January if the design is to have someone pound away and foul opponents inside.
