Texas officially announces ND Games

Recommended Posts

Austin – The University of Texas and University of Notre Dame have agreed to a home-and-home football series that will see the Longhorns travel to South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2028, while the Fighting Irish will visit Austin on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2029.

The non-conference games will match two of the winningest programs in NCAA history with Texas ranking fourth on the NCAA all-time victory list with 957 wins, and Notre Dame just one win behind with 956 to rank fifth.

UT and Notre Dame have met 12 times in football dating back to 1913 with the Irish winning nine of those. The two traditional football powers last met in 2016 in Austin, resulting in an instant classic, as the Longhorns came away with a 50-47 victory in double overtime against the No. 10 Irish. The teams faced each other in South Bend the year before with the No. 11 Irish taking a 38-3 decision.

Prior to that, they squared off in 1996 in Austin, completing a home-and-home series that started in South Bend in 1995 with Notre Dame winning both. In a top-10 matchup in 1996, the No. 9 Irish claimed a 27-24 win over the No. 6 Longhorns, while both teams were also ranked in 1995 when No. 21 Notre Dame secured a 55-27 win over No. 13 Texas.

The previous three meetings all came in the Cotton Bowl following the 1969, 1970 and 1977 seasons. The Horns' last victory over the Irish prior to 2016 came in UT's National Championship season in 1969. That year, No. 1 Texas knocked off No. 9 Notre Dame, 21-17, in one of the most memorable Cotton Bowl games ever. The No. 6 Irish came back the next season to defeat the No. 1 Longhorns, who had just been named 1970 National Champions by UPI, 24-11. No. 5 Notre Dame then defeated No. 1 Texas, 38-10, in the 1977 Cotton Bowl to prevent UT from claiming its fourth national title.

Notre Dame won the series' first two meetings in Austin in 1913 (30-7) and 1915 (36-7) before Texas registered a 7-6 victory in South Bend in 1934. The Irish claimed both ends of a home-and-home series in 1952 and 1954 before the historic Cotton Bowl contests.

The game in 2028 joins previously scheduled non-conference home games against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 2 and UTSA on Sept. 16, while the on in 2029 is now part of a non-conference slate that includes ULM on Sept. 1 and UTEP on Sept. 15.

Would be unsurprising!

I was at the game the last time Texas played there.

Grew up an hour and change from State College. What are you memories of that game? Never got to see Penn State under Paterno live. And that was Beaver Stadium pre-expansion.

It was a great atmosphere overall, especially pre-game.

But the first three quarters, it felt more like a TCU or Baylor game, just with more people. It was pretty damn raucous in the fourth quarter when they felt like they were gonna lose.
