  • Harbaugh to NFL - The Repercussions

    Bobby Burton

Jim Harbaugh is headed back to the NFL.

What does that mean to the University of Texas?

Well, just like when Nick Saban retired, players of the coach's former school, Michigan, now have 30 days to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

There are a multitude of players on the Michigan roster that Texas would likely have interest in, including defensive tackle Mason Graham and cornerback Will Johnson. However, neither player has openly mentioned leaving Ann Arbor following the national title win.

For right now, it is almost entirely conjecture.

However, in the coming days, we'll see if many Michigan players enter the portal and if the Horns are truly interested in any of them.

I'm literally on my hands and knees praying for Brian Kelly's phone to be ringing from a call from Ann Arbor right now.

Is is more probable for Michigan to go after Brian Kelly? or for Michigan to promote someone within their own ranks to HC? Typically, it's an OC or DC that gets a head coaching promotion, and never anyone else on the staff, but I would expect Harbaugh to take with him both his DC and OC.

I just really want to continue to see LSU take hits after their abysmal 2023 season (though they had the Heisman winner, who was the most forgettable winner in recent memory), Brian Kelly's departure from Baton Rouge, and uncertainty for the coming seasons, would mean further recruiting growth and expansion by Texas in the state of Louisiana and east Texas.

Do they have any Texas kids on the roster by chance ?

Not really, but I'm praying for a snowball effect to occur should Michigan decide to reach out to Brian Kelly to offer him the HC position in Ann Arbor.
Kelly's departure from LSU would be the real win for Texas, seeing that LSU is one of the major recruiting players in the states of Texas and Louisiana, Brian Kelly leaving Baton Rouge would once again throw LSU into a bit of an uncertain period, which would mean one or two of their key players might decide to enter the portal as well as 2025 and 2026 recruits leaning to LSU would now open up their recruitment.

And whoever they hire comes in and brings his own DL coach . . . That would be unfortunate but Davis wouldn't stay unemployed very long.

It’s going to be Moore and Mintet is gone. They may promote the DL coach to DL.

I understand keeping Moore for transition purposes but do you really want an unproven coach leading the team that just won’t the NC? I know it’s not a popular opinion but I would try and go get a bigger name or a coach with more skins on the wall.

I get wanting Kelly to go to Ann Arbor, but I do not see that happening at all. Just think the timing’s too inconvenient.

Can't decide what's better/worse for Texas....Kelly leaving and potentially grabbing some LSU transfers or having to face Kelly @ Michigan the next 2 years?

Well we could possibly get DK Moore but would you rather face Kelly for 2 years outta conference or possibly every other year in the SEC

Gotta think the academic calendar is gonna limit movement from Michigan.  Kids are 2 weeks into classes and have one week to add/drop into classes they've missed 2 weeks of.  That's a rough move unless you've already secretly made the deal and been working on the schedule.

My thoughts exactly. Maybe a UTSA or a NMSU does this (promote an assistant coach to the head coaching position without much thought), but being one of the biggest brands in all of collegiate sports, Michigan would be stupid to quickly shoe in Moore without interviewing other big names around the country.

oh yeah, I'm not shy to say Rodney Terry was an emotional hire coming off of an Elite Eight appearance with Chris Beard's team.

We should have spent ANY amount of time looking around for another coach at the very least.

My pure dream fantasy domino effect with Harbaugh to the NFL:

    1. Mason Graham & Will Johnson enter the portal, visit Texas together immediately & walk out of the visit with a commitment from both.

    2. Brian Kelly accepts the Michigan head coaching job.

    3. Harold Perkins enters the portal, visits & commits to Texas.

    4. Harlem Berry & Dakorien Moore decommit from LSU & end up in our 2025 class.

    One can hope 😂

    I love your dream.
