Yep, there's "Falling from the ranks" and then there's THIS from the Aggs...

Pinckney would be a Captain on my Longhorns "First player off the team bus" group. My goodness he sure looked the part of Intimidator. I seem to recall that Lovell forfeited his last NFL chance with the Rams when he went to the Million Man March instead of making his deadline for reporting to the team.

Texas Basketball question about firing Rick Barnes in 2015
Jc Dobbs replied to Clint Baros's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Smart's VCU teams were fun and exciting to watch. Texas fans were used to Barnes' style which was rasslin' on a basketball court. I'll never understand why Smart changed his whole approach. We never got a chance to see "Havoc" in Austin. We thought we were getting something like the old Nolan Richardson full court press style. Uh, no. I liked Barnes but his style had grown a bit stale. I'll admit having thought I wish he'd have accepted some stylistic help and stayed at Texas. -
As a kid I listened to the Longhorns on the AM radio. The Southwest Conference on the Humble Oil and Refining Network. In those days the NCAA only allowed ONE game to be televised weekly on Saturday afternoon on ABC TV. I remember the legendary radio play by play announcer Kern Tips calling Randy Braband's name a lot for tackles and PBUs. He mentioned Randy's high school a lot... I seem to recall he was from somewhere in SE Texas. Great player on some great Texas Defensive squads. Wonderful memories for me listening with my late father.

After graduating with an MBA my first job was in Houston. After just a few months my corporate employer sent me to live and work in Memphis. I enjoyed going to SEC football games throughout the South over the next few years. It was "back in the day," circa late 1980s. When Texas played "State" in Starkville I went to the game with Texas fan friends who came for the game and a long weekend in Memphis. Bobby has mentioned his experience attending that game. Longhorns were optimistic to open the season... think it was 1990 or maybe '91. Butch Hadnot decided to change his running style that day and it was a bad decision for the Longhorns. Regarding Starkville, I remember thinking that MSU would be attractive to a certain kind of recruit. Kids who wanted a small town college atmosphere and a venue where they could totally immerse themselves in the student -athlete experience without many distractions. Later I went to a baseball game in Starkville when MSU played Ole Miss and I thought the baseball experience was more enjoyable than the atmosphere State projected for football. I remember thinking if I had been a high school kid looking to play college sports MSU baseball would have been far more appealing than football and it seemed like Starkville to the MLB would have been more reachable than the NFL. Glad I went and got to understand what MSU was like. Back then anyway it was a very small town and the fans were super loyal. And like all college rivalries they really didn't like the Ole Miss Rebels. The cowbells were their signature thing. Didn't really bother me but I remember when the Longhorn Band used to rattle cowbells for first downs and big plays. Hook 'Em!

Hoops: Texas vs. Oklahoma Game Thread
Jc Dobbs replied to Gerry Hamilton's topic in On Texas Football Forum
I'm not proud of the fact that I didn't watch the game, but it got to the point this season that I just couldn't stand it. I've never been like this before... I've always been there through thick and thin to sing The Eyes at the end of every game of every sport. But this year I've tuned out of a couple of games before halftime and then I just didn't watch at all. Maybe it's because Texas has been playing well in the other sports and our outlook is optimistic outside of men's basketball. I even joked with a Longhorn friend that I would take Rick Barnes back on The Forty... and then Tennessee lost a key game near the end of their season just before the tournament. Felt familiar for Ole' Rick. Best wishes for CDC because managing this is gonna be a challenge. -
Bobby Batronic -- Some people are on the "OMAD" diet plan for weight loss and/or blood glucose management. "OMAD" is One Meal A Day and they follow a strict timetable about what and when they eat in a 24-hour window. Aggy HC does NOT appear to be an OMAD guy to me. I'm not a medical professional so I only make a personal observation that he appears to be obese and unhealthy to me. I'm no Aggy fan. But the last picture I saw of Elmo was concerning. As a fellow Longhorn I appreciate your postings... have noticed your observations for years. Hook 'Em!

I might be done as a Mavs fan
Jc Dobbs replied to TooBrokeToPayAttention21's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Agree with you about Luka... perhaps the Mavs could have gotten more for him, but IDK. I grew up in DFW and used to go to Mavericks games with my late father at Reunion Arena. As a young adult I worked for a company with HQ in Dallas and I got to use the Company's season tickets on occasion back in the days of Mark Aguirre and Roy Tarpley and James Donaldson. I hoped the Mavs would improve with the Adelsons in majority ownership but so far ... not so much. I'm just not a fan of Mark Cuban and Adam Silver's woke policies have cooled my interest in the NBA. -
175 Days Till Ohio State - Top 3 Reasons Texas will win..
Jc Dobbs replied to Bevo92's topic in On Texas Football Forum
I appreciate it Bevo 92. Your analysis is excellent and your post struck a sensitive memory of mine. Our late friend Mary was the most passionate Texas fan I have ever known. She played girls basketball in high school and was a sports fan in general. My wife and I went to a Dallas Stars game with her and her husband and after the game my wife said she enjoyed the experience despite not knowing about hockey. Mary's response was "Well, any game with a bunch of tough guys on ice is cool but what makes it great is everybody has a big-ass stick!" Thanks and Hook 'Em! -
Fair question. I thought Arch was more demonstrative than I was expecting. I think a part of Arch's celebrating was his age-- some of the younger players are celebrating more as each new generation of recruits sees playing time. Another part was Arch enjoying coming off the bench to get some PT or being happy to play well when filling in for Quinn. Finally, Arch celebrated coming off the field and in front of the Texas sideline. Unlike what we saw in the clip from the OU spring practice where the former Washington State QB chased his WR to the end zone imitating the Land Thief wagon and ponies all the way. You have a point. I admit to being an old guy who remembers my late father father fussing about Billy "White Shoes" Johnson's end zone celebrations for the Oilers. Thanks!

175 Days Till Ohio State - Top 3 Reasons Texas will win..
Jc Dobbs replied to Bevo92's topic in On Texas Football Forum
175 days. A full Summer is 90 days. 3 full Summers is 180 days. Only 5 more than the 175 noted. It reminds me of the calendar to be endured until the '25 Season kicks off. I went to a Spring Game at DKR and at Matt's El Rancho dinner table my best friend's wife said from then until Labor Day was the longest most boring stretch of her year. Sadly, our dear friend Mary passed away unexpectedly that Memorial Day weekend at age 43. Since then we celebrate every victory by her beloved Longhorns. She would have really enjoyed the last two seasons. When the first game begins with such promise there's always Texas Exes and Longhorns fans missing their loved ones who aren't there for the renewal of football. I always think of all our fans, past and present when that first kickoff begins the new season. But until then... there's hot summer days on the way. Thanks for letting me share this personal memory as a longtime Longhorns fan. Y'all are MY people and I wish we could ALL be together again for every season opener. This one might be special in Columbus. Hook 'Em! -
On any team, anywhere, when I see the QB throw a TD pass and sprint down the field... it's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. As the Old School coaches would say, "Son, act like you have done it before and you ain't surprised you just did it again!" One of the things I liked about Quinn. He played it cool like he expected to do it every time. Quinn conserved his energy and didn't waste it running and jumping down the field. Hook 'Em!

Most heartbreaking play when it comes to Texas?
Jc Dobbs replied to Blake Munroe's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Bobby - Memories are strange things... after posting here about being at the two Cotton Bowl games...I was at the game against Cal and I totally forgot the botched PAT. My memory of that game was how I just couldn't believe the Longhorns lost that game to a middling PAC 12 team... the only thing I recalled was just an overall subpar effort by Texas, which was beginning to happen too frequently. You mentioned that you were just a kid who hated that Texas lost to Notre Dame on New Year's Day 1978. I was a graduate student at Texas and sold my student ticket and sat with friends... they had said their ticket location wasn't great. Turned out that we were on the very top row row and my left arm was against the south wall of the Cotton Bowl press box. After Texas lost I was glad I didn't watch from my seat in the student section on the 40- yard line. Another memory of that day was ND wearing the bright green jerseys. Cotton Bowl seating was always a different experience from the OU game because you just got used to sitting in the North End of the stadium for the OU game. Always felt weird sitting in other locations for the New Year's Day games. North Dallas Forty created quite a stir, BTW. Pete Gent. Thanks! -
Most heartbreaking play when it comes to Texas?
Jc Dobbs replied to Blake Munroe's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Blake... the more I thought about this, the more bad memories kept popping up. The Decade of Doom that Coach Sark and recent Longhorns players have pulled the Texas program out of is hopefully a permanent part of the team's history. I got truly depressed at times during the Decade of Doom because I just didn't see the Horns getting back to prominence... when Baylor and Okie Lite had our number along with KState and it seemed like Stoops could beat our starters with his backups. The years when we celebrated recruiting a single five star player ... Thank goodness for Coach Sark and the recent players he's recruited and developed. The future is finally looking bright. Hook 'Em!
