I guess the “bright side” for this is that defense went against Ole Miss, who is second on this list, and they seemingly held them in check for the majority of the game. Obviously, there are injuries now on that side that are more important, but we did that without Simmons, and he could be back this game along with the most important positions on defense still being healthy enough to go.

He’s not a statue but he doesn’t threaten most of the field at all. Anything can happen and given how Texas has played up and down, things can unravel. But I watched them the last few weeks and he isn’t good at all.

I agree that anything can happen, and we’ve seen it before. But I’ve watched some MSU games without Taylor and their backup quarterback playing, and he is BAD. Like, I know we’re traumatized by Jones from Florida coming in and winning against us, but Mississippi State’s backup is legitimately not good. He’s not horrific but not anywhere close to Tramell Jones. Plus, we will have game tape on him.

Those are some very good points. I hope he is able to get his head straight, because he seems like a great kid. I know this is all eating him up. I can’t imagine what he could be going through mentally. Are you more leaning towards the side of at this point in his career that if this is how it plays out again tomorrow, he may just not be as good and may do better going to a lower-level school? It’s just so hard to understand exactly what is wrong, and that’s what I hate about how things have transpired. Because ultimately, Sark is the head coach, and if this isn’t the type of offense that works with Arch, he should’ve realized that before this year and tailored it more to what he does well. But I can’t argue with what you’ve been saying about Arch as a player, in any way really. Crap offensive play calling or not, there are things he should be doing that even in a stale offense would work well with even mildly average quarterback play.

I’m curious as to your take on Arch. It seems like you think he’s legitimately either just not that good or something is broken to the point that he can’t be fixed. I know I’ve seen some of your takes about him recently on the board but everyone else seems to think it’s our system, which part of that even you agree. But everyone else seems to think just get him away from what Sark has taught him and go to another school and he will be in a system that works with his strengths and we will see 2024 or end of 2025 Arch Manning. Do you think if he doesn’t recover this season it won’t really matter where he goes, that he’s just never really been as good as we liked to believe?

I think half the team portaling out is overblown. Yes it can happen, anything can in the NIL age. But hell, Florida mostly kept it together after getting rid of Napier. I’m not sure why Texas couldn’t do the same with at least the more important players they wanna keep. It would be a sh1tshow regardless, but not to the level of Penn State.

I’m curious, why does Glenn Schumann keep coming up? I know he’s a very good DC, but are we sure that will translate well? It seems like outside of a select few, we’ve seen too many DC to HC types flame out.

I hate to say this, but was Manning ever THAT good? I’m not saying he was ever that bad. But I watched a clip from a high school game of his where he was being chased down and seemingly trying to scan the field, but of course that was at the 3A or 4A level in Louisiana, so he could easily outrun the defense. But I don’t want to just say he was always overrated to begin with, because we saw glimpses of how good he can be in 2024, and at the end of last year, he was pretty good. That’s why I’m at a crossroads of whether the criticisms of him were right to a degree all along or if this is Sark’s doing. Obviously, it is to some degree because we’ve seen two five-star quarterbacks year over year become a shell of what they were to begin with. I don’t want to fully cut ties with Sark yet, but I’m just about there as it is. I want the best for Arch, even if it’s not at Texas. But is it possible we’re seeing the same thing that Weigman went through? He looked horrible at A&M, and now he actually looks good with a competent OC that tailored the offense to his specific skillset instead of trying to make him something he’s not. Yes, it’s in the Big 12, but with the way Arch is playing, he would be getting clobbered in that conference as well. I feel like the answer is somewhat in-between. Arch has issues of his own and the way Sark has coached him. But I’d hate to think he’d go somewhere else and look like a good game manager to a very, very good quarterback. Because if he goes somewhere else and balls out, I’d really hate to still be stuck with Sark. That would be the biggest red flag on Sark’s development for quarterbacks at Texas, if there already isn’t one, of course. Yeah I mean that really wasn’t their fault. Yes it was a team loss and everyone on each side of the ball deserves some credit for that loss, but the defense did pretty good overall.

I get being concerned about him being stubborn and sticking to a script that isn’t working when we’ve seen glimpses of things that clearly work. That’s 100% a valid concern, but you guys have to realize coaches aren’t throwing their players under the bus, coordinators, or anyone else on the team. He didn’t do it against anyone on the defensive side of the ball last year and we saw how that played out after the season was done. I’m pretty sure Ryan Day came out saying the same things about not giving up play-calling duties and what not around the time Ohio State lost to Michigan two years ago. His answer’s can definitely drive you crazy, don’t get me wrong but at the end of the day any change big or small will never be announced in the usual weekly presser.

In Arkansas’s defense, they’re not good. At least you can understand why the students would do that. Even in the most recent “meh” years of USC they should still somewhat have like 70% capacity. Miss me with the beach, it’s too hot, other things to do in Los Angeles. While that’s true I’m sure you can find enough people in a city of 3 million and a county of over 10 million people to fill up a stadium…
