I'm much older than the Shipleys, but I also grew up in West Texas, with a brother 3 years older, and we both played sports every day of the year, went to church, and started college on basketball scholarships.

I'm concerned about Gerry. You know, a lot of people who live in their cars, are unaware of the dangers of hot mayo. If he comes down with some kind of food poisoning, he could miss these so-very-crucial first days of practice....not to mention some of the way-too-early basketball reporting.

I was there in the student section also. Texas was defending National Champ and ranked No. 1 to start the year. We were behind and it was late in the game. The student section was on its feet and collectively started stomping on the aluminum bleacher seats, demanding a win -- and Speyrer came through with yet another heroic 45 yard pass play. The crowd went crazy.

I was at the '76 State Track Meet also. His anchor leg on the mile relay was thrilling.
