The Texas Defense Finishing Games
AustinsTruth replied to AustinsTruth's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Don't tell my boss -
The audacity, no matter what the question was, to say the Texas defense has to finish better.... The Texas defense gave up 3 points in the second half against Ohio State (Includes a missed field goal). If that isn't finishing a game, it isn't possible to. Obviously they gave up the 2 TDs in the second half against Tennessee (Oh wait, one was a punt return TD, shout out special teams), but I would say they did literally finish the game (because your special teams unit and coach are both terrible) by getting a stop after the onside kick recovery and not allowing a field goal chance. I wonder why the defense was not as good in the second half....Perhaps because the offense had 6 three and outs (-6 total on those SIX drives). Plus a drive that ended with an interception on the second play of the drive....So 7 drives that were three and outs or even less. All this combined to the defense still only giving up 7 points in the second half. Against OU, Texas lost the 4th quarter 17-7. Of the 17 points that Texas gave up in the 4th, 7 were from a pick six, 3 were from a 31 yard drive to walk it off after an interception. So, lets say the defense gave up 10 points. I wonder if 3 and outs played a role in that? 7 drives in the OU game were three and outs, 2 more resulted in interceptions (Pick 6 on the second play of the drive, game losing int on the 4th play of the drive), and 1 drive had a first down on the first play of the drive and then had to punt before moving the chains again. So 10 drives of 4 plays or less. (Only 15 drives all game). I do agree with Sark that technically the defense hasn't played its best in the 4th quarter the last two games...the reason is clearly because of the offense's inability to do anything (They still have only given up 17 points in the 4th quarter against Ohio State, Tennessee, and OU combined). I would love for someone to find me a team that had so many three and outs (or 4 and outs), turnovers, and special teams errors and the defense was still able to "finish" the game (basically requiring a shut out in the 4th).

24-team playoff nearly a reality
AustinsTruth replied to CJ Vogel's topic in On Texas Football Forum
So it is now pretty much impossible for teams in the (alleged) P4 conferences that play maybe one ranked team a year to not make it. There is quite literally 0 reason to schedule any good games. Play nobody, get rewarded by being fresh for the playoffs. Rewards bad conferences over good conferences. Maybe we can stop pretending the Big 12 and ACC are "power" conferences. I'd say the Big 12 this year is closer to the Pac 12 or the American than they are to the SEC. -

If Sark Misses the Playoffs this Season
AustinsTruth replied to AustinsTruth's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Along the lines of the point of the OP. I don't see a ton of options that have a track record of doing it. There are only 4 active head coaches with a NC and two of them are Dabo and Ryan Day (I wouldn't want either). The other 2 aren't leaving. I saw some posts about Traylor and GJ but they definitely haven't done it at the big time level and that would be quite a risk. Can always call Brian Kelly or Jimbo. -
If Sark Misses the Playoffs this Season
AustinsTruth replied to AustinsTruth's topic in On Texas Football Forum
I'm a lawyer, I get bored. I also have an unhealthy addiction to sports. It also is a website specifically created for sports topics, so uhh yes? -
I said before the season that last season was a much harder schedule to make the playoffs. Going @ Georgia and @ Ohio State, essentially guaranteed that we would have to run the table. Instead, they went out and lost to a 4 win Florida team and had one of the most miraculous wins I have ever seen against Mississippi State. They did manage to beat both rivals (I always thought they were VERY overrated last season). This season, they somehow beat Ohio State (similar miraculous feeling as Mississippi State). Then followed it up by trying their best to convince Tennessee to beat them and did convince Oklahoma to beat them. With two teams in two seasons that are all Sark's recruits, missing the playoffs twice in a row will make that seat quite hot. Especially if in both seasons they lose to terrible, terrible teams (OU this year included) that prevent them from getting into the playoffs. Arch Manning, 30+ million dollar roster, both rivals are bad this season.... I am currently of the belief that there isn't a coach in college that puts us in a better situation (sure as hell not Dan Lanning). Marcus Freeman should never leave Notre Dame (and he lost to Northern Illinois at home, people forget). I'm not sold on HCs in their first year having success (So far). Not sure who you would hire, but people are going to (understandably) be very unhappy about the job the HC has done the last two seasons. We'll see if they can go on a run, sure hope so. Not saying they shouldn't force Sark to make hard decisions (that he probably won't like), but not sure exactly who you would move to. Don't want to end up like Penn State, that's for sure. Thoughts?

If it was that the defenses looked good it'd be one thing. I think people are more upset that we run directly into 6-7 man boxes despite it being obvious that the numbers don't work. Or have pass plays that take 4.5 seconds to develop on obvious 6-7 man pressures. Can't do the easy/obvious things right currently. (As evidenced by UTSA game)

Ran into the Texas offense
AustinsTruth replied to Gerry Hamilton's topic in On Texas Football Forum
It's in better shape, still has a wheel. -
Against Ohio State: We scored 5 points more than Illinois did (blowout, not true comparison), and 10 points more than IOWA did. Against Tennessee: We scored 6 more points than Auburn, 3 more than Arkansas did, and 4 points less than Georgia Tech did. Against OU: We scored 7 more than MICHIGAN did (while giving up 14 on Offense/ST combo) and scored 18 more than New Mexico...Again, while giving them the game on offense/ST combined. And in the game against the DAUNTING UTSA defense: Scored 4 more than Texas State did, 15 less than Colorado State did, 16 more than Rice did, and 6 more than South Florida did...Colorado State, Texas State, and South Florida all put up those numbers on the road, while we were at home. Congrats, but you are gonna have to beat multiple good defenses to achieve anything close to what the goals are.

Besides being false on its face to anybody who has neurons firing in their brain, let's look at the actual offensive rankings this season so far. Total offense: 80th, 364.8 Yds/Game 364.8.....(Top 42% of FBS) Scoring offense: 59th 31.4 points/game....(Bottom 42% of FBS) Rushing offense: 88th, 141.6 yards/game....(Bottom 63% of FBS) Passing offense: 63rd, 223.2 yards/game....(Bottom 46% of FBS) These are out of 138 teams...So if you want to say the offense is better than exactly half of the country, they almost are. I would say that given the players (and the money), that isn't just not meeting expectations. That is not playing "average" that is terrible. For everything except yards per game, they are below average nationally. It gets worse for their place in the SEC: By SEC Rank: Total offense: 11th...(Bottom 68% of SEC) Scoring offense: 11th....(Bottom 68.8% of SEC) Passing yards/game: 9th....(Bottom 56% of SEC) Rushing yards/game: 11th....(Bottom 68% of SEC) So, they are almost average nationally, and are significantly below average in the SEC. Fans react to what their eyes tell them, and their eyes aren't saying "wow that isn't what we expected." Their eyes are telling them "wow, this is terrible."

After Sark's Presser, Expect More of the Same
AustinsTruth posted a topic in On Texas Football Forum
Expect the same from the offense and special teams moving forward. Short presser, no accountability. Refuses to improve or change. He obviously believes in what he is doing, despite the games showing it isn't working. -
I mean, it's been multiple years of the offense being bad. It's not some complicated thing either, it's obvious what the issues are. Demanding improvement is required to win anything in this sport, refusing to do it means you will get passed, rapidly.
-
Either a reverse toss sweep to Masunas for -5 yards or a TD pass for 35 yards. 80/20 who knows.
-
Not gonna get an argument from me on that. I thought play calling/sequencing was greedy all game. The only chance Oklahoma had was creating havoc and big plays on defense/special teams. To come out and throw it a ton just increases their chances to make those plays. Could've ran it every play, scored 10 points and won 10-3.
-
The momentum and feel of the game. I might be alone but I thought it was less than 50% chance he was gonna make it (he only was 60% from over 50 yards in career).
-
I would say neither. Special teams might not give up another touchdown, but is it really fixed? Most likely is that the offense puts up more points coming up because the defenses aren't good (Defense will give up more points also). Nothing has shown they can adjust or improve.
-
Missed field goal felt like a guarantee to me. I doubt I am alone in that. Either way, with how much the donors bought for the offense, including the coach, you should be able to get 2 yards. If you can't, at least they have to go 7 yards further. I felt like there was no chance that the kick was gonna be made.

Arch is 3-3 in true road games. Win 1: Kentucky (scored 16 with huge help from Niblett). 5-7 team Win 2: Miss. St (5-8 team) Win 3: Tennessee (Just beat Arkansas by 7) Loss 1: Ohio State, played terrible, scored 7 points Loss 2: Georgia, played decent enough honestly, scored 10 points Loss 3: Florida, he played fine, scored 21 points. (4-8 team) Arch is 2-1 in neutral site games Win 1: Oklahoma last year, scored 23 points (major help from Niblett, including a TD) Win 2: Michigan (Bowl game, backup defense for Michigan) 9-4 team Loss: Oklahoma this year, scored 24 points, Pick 6, 2 sacks that created a punt block TD, Game losing interception Total record away from home: 5-4. Records for teams we beat (excluding 2026 Tennessee): 29-22 Records for teams we beat including 2026 Tennessee: 34-23 (for now).

We have a coach that just said 3 weeks ago he was brought here to win, and even Saturday said he was hired because he was a good offensive play caller. He is being paid over $11 million dollars this year and was given an offensive roster that he hand picked that is worth probably around 10-15 million dollars...Then in a rivalry game, on 4th and 2 in the 4th quarter, he thinks it's acceptable to say we didn't have a play that he was more confident would be successful than a 52 yard field goal attempt. I don't think anyone thought the kicker was gonna make that kick, I sure didn't. To go to the press and say you don't have an answer to get 2 yards just shows how he has no feel for the game during the game. You have a top 5 offensive roster in the entire country, you are supposed to be a top 5 OC, you have had a bottom tier offense for 3 straight years, to say that you are good at calling plays still is just ignorant. Something has to change or 2023 is the ceiling.

7 points: Take 2 bad sacks, special teams blunder, punt block touchdown 3 points: Oklahoma puts out a garbage punt package to confuse/make Texas call a timeout. Coach calls a timeout because he doesn't think the special teams coach has the special teams prepared. Oklahoma now kicks a field goal. Poorly prepared unit (again) gives them a chance and they take it. 7 points: Their only real drive, force a turnover, bad penalty on Biles (yes, you choose how to land and you thought you'd get away with it), get a stop again, bad pass interference call because of getting our trail hand too high on the receiver. Touchdown from the 2 yard line. 7 points: Pick 6 on a terrible decision that was only surpassed by an ever more terrible pass. 3 points: Offense has the ball and we make another terrible decision and throw an interception when they only need 25-30 yards to hit a walk off, they do. Every single point they had was because of the offense/special teams and 2 bad penalties by the defense....No more excuses for the "Hustle penalties"..... Any penalty is a bad penalty, period.

Discipline is never going to improve under Sark. After the Tennessee mess, he still gave the players cigars to smoke in the locker room despite that not being our tradition. Even at Alabama, where it is their tradition to smoke a Tennessee pack after a win, they would not have allowed a celebration like that after making such bad mistakes that almost cost them that game. We have a middle aged linebacker coach that got a DUI on a WEDNESDAY, IN SEASON, who had no real consequences for his actions. There is no accountability in this program from the head coach. At least we don't have to hear about their record anymore and ignore what we see...Process over results

Saban ... ESPN Documentary thread
AustinsTruth replied to Gerry Hamilton's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Documentary was done very poorly. Bad storytelling by the producers. It will be successful of course (anything about Nick Saban would be), but left a ton to be desired.
