The misconception here is that the media-rights fight is about forcing the SEC and Big Ten into a TV pool. It never was. Joining has always been voluntary. The real question is whether the final bill keeps enough incentives, or consequences, that "voluntary" quietly turns into "you'd better join." Postseason access was the actual lever, which is why Sankey went after it. Take that out and the section sits in the bill doing nothing. Those two keep cutting their own deals, and a pool without their inventory isn't the $4-8 billion everybody's been selling. So: political win for Cody Campbell, policy win for the SEC and Big Ten. He gets to say Congress passed a national framework. They get to say they protected the model that already runs the sport. But did we fix anything? The biggest spenders are already operating around these caps through associated entities. If the bill just legalizes what they're already doing, that's not a ceiling, that's a floor.

Pass defense was unsatisfactory in 4 of the 5 seasons PK was here. They finished outside the top 60 in every season outside of 2024. It cost them a chance to play for a national championship in 2023 IMO when Penix just absolutely shredded the secondary. I don't blame the defense for the Ohio State loss in 2024, but that screen pass right before the half completely shifted the momentum of that game. The comments Sark made this offseason about Muschamp being able to handle that side of the ball completely is probably the biggest factor though. PK had some troubles tying his fronts to the coverages. He brought in Patterson in 2022 and that seemed to help quite a bit. I don't think it was a coincidence that when he left in 2023 that they took a pretty big step backwards. Then in 2024 PK brought in Nansen to help, and that's when we saw the improvements in the secondary. It also didn't hurt that they were experienced and brought in a guy like Mukuba on top of that. Lastly, Sark wants to be more aggressive on that side of the ball. The one game that really bothered me the last year was the Florida game. Lagway had a bad calf and was essentially playing on 1 leg. PK decided that not blitzing and playing soft zone coverage that day was what he wanted to do, and inevitably it failed, miserably. The Miss. St. game also stood out to me. Same game plan really to the Florida game, but when they got down by 3 scores in the 4th quarter, it forced him to be more aggressive. When they started bringing pressure and speeding up Shapen, they had a ton of success. Makes you wonder what that game had looked like had PK been more aggressive from the jump. I also think Anthony Hill was misused in 2025. He was at his best when he was playing close to or at the line of scrimmage in passing situations. We just didn't see as much of that as we did in 2024 and it shows in his production. It hurt his draft stock a bit IMO.

Herman is this generation's John Mackovic. He did some good things and won some big games, but he was so unlikeable that nobody stood up for him at the end of his tenure. It took a 4-7 disaster to get Mackovic fired. Herman got shown the door in large part because nobody liked him.

I'll admit that that's worth the lake level at Canyon Lake dropping about an inch and a half.

Robison is going to be the pick today, and for good reason, but the other two definitely made an impact on the world. Very cool group.

The countdown rolls on with 39 days until kickoff, and today's spotlight belongs to three Longhorns who each left their mark wearing No. 39. Brian Robison (DE, 2002–06) headlines the group after helping lead Texas to the 2005 national championship. Robison started 36 games, totaled 181 tackles, 42 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and blocked six kicks (second-most in school history). He went on to play 11 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 2019. Jud Atchison (HB, 1935–37) was one of the top all-around athletes of his era. A dangerous runner and return man, Atchison later became a two-time track All-American, won the 1939 NCAA long jump national championship, captured three Southwest Conference long jump titles, and was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 1985. He also served his country during World War II. Lew "Mickey" Mayne (HB, 1941–42) helped Texas win the 1942 Southwest Conference title and the program's first-ever bowl victory in the 1943 Cotton Bowl. After serving in World War II, he played on the 1947 AAFC champion Cleveland Browns before returning home to build a legendary career as a coach, principal, and superintendent in Daingerfield. His impact was so significant that the town renamed its football stadium Mickey Mayne Tiger Stadium in his honor. Three players, each with a legacy that extends well beyond the Forty Acres.
