OTF Premium Texas basketball 2026-27 season thread
WRNC replied to Gerry Hamilton's topic in On Texas Football Forum
Best men's college basketball offseason moves "Best overall offseason Texas Sean Miller treated the offseason like Black Friday. Just when it seemed he was done shopping, he found another deal he couldn't resist. In July, Marcus Spears Jr., the former No. 1 player in the 2027 recruiting class, announced that he was reclassifying up a year and would join the Longhorns, a team that had already made itself a contender over the early summer. That plan started with the return of Matas Vokietaitis, who averaged 16 points and nearly 54.5% shooting from the field during UT's Sweet 16 run. Colorado's Isaiah Johnson and TCU's David Punch were two of the most coveted transfers in the country. Miller signed them. He also got Austin Goosby, a five-star recruit and another anchor of this team's No. 4 ranked recruiting class. The Longhorns look like national title contenders months after losing Dailyn Swain, a first-round pick in this summer's NBA draft." https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/50160306/mens-college-basketball-best-worst-offseason-moves-2026-2027 Yahoo Sports: WINNER: TEXAS........ https://sports.yahoo.com/mens-college-basketball/article/college-basketball-transfer-portal-winners-and-losers-florida-on-the-rise-kansas-in-precarious-situation-170305632.html CBS sports: Winner: Sean Miller loading up for Year 2 at Texas https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/2026-college-basketball-transfer-portal-winners-losers/ -
I definitely feel this could be the beginning of the end of the Sark era for us. It might be in a couple years that he moves on but his ego, stubbornness, and loyalties keeps him from ever being an elite coach. He's a good head coach when it comes to recruiting/branding side of the job but when it comes to the football itself, he's been failing for awhile now because there is no accountability for the core of the offensive coaches. Flood, Milwee, and Sark as the playcaller would have been let go by now by the top coaches purely on performance. Outside of the the tackle position (1 first rounder, 1 second rounder), Flood has been terrible developing and recruiting the center and guard position. Jake Majors was our only decent center and he was from the Herman/Hand era. Cruz was a disaster and we've yet to see Christian. Connor, Campbell, Hutson, Robertson, Kibble, and Stroh have all been bad at protection and just average at run blocking. Nick Brooks transferred. That's a horrible track record for 6 years. Only 2 of those years our OL has not been on of the biggest weaknesses of the team. Milwee's biggest strength is recruiting but Quinn and Arch have had flaws from the get go that never improved. Quinn had bad footwork from day 1 to the day he left. Arch's decision making is arguably worse now than he was as a freshman. It's crazy how limited Sark's playbook is right now with Arch. At least with Quinn, he was very good at running Sark's pre-snap eye candy. Arch can't even do that right now. So you have to question, did they recruit the right QBs for their system? Or are they just inept at building up and developing QBs? Whichever way, it's been a failure as a coach. So the question is why is someone like PK that for the most part produced quality defenses fired before guys like this. My guess is they are "yes" men Sark likes to have around or they are his buddies (include Jeff Banks in that). At some point every head coach has to protect himself by scapegoating his assistants. I think we're getting close to that when it comes to these guys, but ultimately it will be Sark's demise as long as he is the playcaller too. Chesney and Stein are showing you what you can do with even limited talent when you're team has an identity and are discipline.

Don’t disagree. And I get that there are exceptions to the blue chips rankings in both directions. But it is proven over and over again that highly ranked high four and five star players pan out more than lower ranked recruits and Flood ain’t signing them.

Yikes. That’s a rough one. -
Agreed. It's gotta be coaching. I'm not confident if you put 2026 Arch in the same spots in 2024 he looks half as good. That's a tragedy from a development perspective.
-
Definitely a part of it. Terrible (as a whole) and will only get worse

“BOOM!!!” every time Texas lands a recruit. OTF spends all offseason hyping every commitment, praising every evaluation, and selling fans on a loaded roster. Six years in, where’s the production? You can’t pump sunshine year-round and then act surprised when fans expect the results you’ve been selling.

Start the Dia Bell or KJ Lacey era?

Yep! -
Incredible. has to be sark. But Milwee needs to be held accountable.

Facts, gonna change the slogan to blocking humans. Like we need some that can

Watching Arch highlights from 2024 and it's a legitimately different player. Mechanics, execution, confidence, etc. What happened? Did the pressure break him and/or is this an indictment on Sark? Worth a watch. It's staggering - https://youtu.be/eMxDPBsVouA?si=5dYH9zf3rieEGfS8

Frankly, Baker isn’t very good. Way over ranked. Weak and slow footed.
-
Baker not being very good has been a killer. Cannot run to the right side. Cannot pick up a blitz to right side.
-
Told us Derrek Cooper wasn't 100% fwiw. Idk if that's something that happened in pregame though because he was not on the injury report.

Does not apply to the offensive line. In six signing classes since Flood arrived, we have signed exactly four players considered blue chip prospects: 2022: Banks / Campbell (both long gone) 2023: None (*credit to finding three star Goosby but this is a blue chip discussion) 2024: Baker 2205: None 2026: Turntine The lack of elite players has continuously been chalked up on sites like this one and others as a “Big Humans” strategy where lesser ranked candidates get groomed in the ranks and blossom when needed as maulers. Looking at the collection of offensive line players this season especially the depth options that strategy has been an abject failure. Say what you want about Coleman, Raleek, Smothers, Bishop, Wingo, etc and what a “talented roster” we have but the lack of an elite OL is the foundation of our suckage and it has been for three seasons now.

Well there be any fallout from this?
Hank South replied to Holy Cow's topic in On Texas Football Forum
There has to be some sort of change. I'm not sure exactly what, whether personnel, shorter leashes, coaching responsibilities. Something. They can't trot this out there again as is and expect a different result imo. -
Screen game to wingo, bishop was working early, but then they didn’t really ever go back to it. Other teams seem to have much easier time moving the ball downfield with quick short passes. Quinn was great in that sense. Maybe KJ would be too. Even though we were up, game was probably in jeopardy when that second drive stalled, think after some bad play action pass play on second and short, then failed third down conversion forcing the field goal. Also that fourth down attempt- was anyone buying the fake to niblett?

We need to evaluate the effects of bruised egos among coaches. Sark looks like the avocado rolling on the ground at HEB. He ruined the golden boy. Time to move on, Sark.
