My biggest worry Saturday is OU's trick plays. They can't run it (131st in the country, under 3 yards a carry), they're awful on third down, and they've put the ball on the ground 10 times already. Meanwhile, our defense is holding teams under 100 rushing yards and just sacked Tennessee 10 times. Venables knows what he's up against. I'm expecting a flea flicker, a reverse pass, a fake punt near midfield, anything to steal a possession or a cheap touchdown. If one of those hits, the whole stadium changes. Their crowd wakes up, their guys start believing, and all of a sudden a team that couldn't move the ball is hanging around in the fourth quarter. We almost learned that the hard way in Knoxville. Tennessee got an extra possession off an onside kick that never should have stood, and we nearly let that game slip. Sark's right about running the ball and winning the turnover battle. But this is Texas-OU. A 2-2 team can make life miserable for No. 1 with a couple plays nobody saw coming. Stay home. Keep contain. Don't bite on every fake. And special teams better be locked in on every kick. Make them earn every point and we win going away. Hand them a couple cheap touchdowns and it's anybody's game. Hook 'em.

# 5 Penalties! We continue to do dumb things, often at the worst possible moment. In a game with emotions running this high we have play with more discipline. # 6 Special Teams. Against Tennessee we gave up a punt return for a TD that got them back in the game, we effed up our long punt return when a returner called for an illegal fair catch, and we muffed an on-side kick that gave Tennessee one last chance (I know it was an illegal kick but it wasn't called and we still should have covered it). Hook 'em!

It's the most wonderful time of the year again: Hate Week! It dawned on me today that OU did exactly as well against Georgia as Arkansas did: both lost by 28. Yikes. Congrats to @PaulieD for winning Week 5 with a record of 4-2! It was a crowded week: eleven of you finished 4-2, and PaulieD's picks were in first. Week 6 of Hold the Mayo is open. Seven SEC games, each one picked against the spread. Person with the best record Holds the Mayo next week. Tiebreaker to first one to submit their picks. Texas A&M @ Missouri (-2.5), 11:00 AM CT South Carolina @ Florida (-14.5), 11:45 AM CT Texas (-9.5) vs Oklahoma (Dallas), 2:30 PM CT Ole Miss (-9.5) @ Vanderbilt, 2:30 PM CT Tennessee (-13.5) @ Arkansas, 3:15 PM CT LSU (-10.5) @ Kentucky, 6:00 PM CT Georgia (-0.5) @ Alabama, 6:30 PM CT Picks for each game lock at its own kickoff, and you can change your picks any time between now and then. Changing a pick won't cost you your spot in the tiebreaker either. The Season tab has everyone's running record since Week 3: stance.fm/mayo?week=season Below are some highlights from Week 5: stance.fm/mayo p.s. it's 2:09 and OU STILL SUCKS!!! Hook 'em 🤘

Apparently there was a fire at the State Fair yesterday. In the ring toss, Mateer missed the bottles and hit a propane tank 20 feet away.

The best decision I've ever made was getting away from the SE and moving to Austin. If you've never had to evacuate, it's the worse. EVER!!! -
I wanted to go through a rabbit hole here about the propensity for the Oklahoma defense and special teams to score points in the Venables era. Obviously, any time your defense or special teams is able to add points to the board, your chances to win the football game greatly increase. I don't think that is breaking news in the slightest. Some teams do it more than others. And to me, Oklahoma has been one of the best in the country during his tenure when it comes to non-offensive scoring. So, I went through each game in the Venables era, dating back to week one in 2022 where I found 17 games in which the Sooners added points to their scoreboard without an offensive touchdown or field goal being the reason. First off, 17 non-offensive scores in a 56 game span is a remarkable rate. That is special stuff. That's 30.3% of games played seeing some sort of non-offensive score. But here are the numbers: 2 punt return touchdowns 4 scoop & scores 5 safeties 7 pick sixes Here is the real reason why I wanted to go down this rabbit hole. In a game like the Red River Shootout where the emotions of the game are as high as they are and the momentum swings can feel like euphoria then the closest thing to your dog dying in the matter of seconds, non-offensive touchdowns are a huge reason for the game. Taking care of the football is paramount. Since Venables took over as head coach at OU: Oklahoma is 15–2 in games they have a non-offensive score Oklahoma is 19–20 in games they do not have a non-offensive score *** As for Texas. Since 2021, the Longhorns are 52–20 in the Sarkisian era. Texas is 16–2 in games they have a non-offensive score Texas is 36–18 in games they do not have a non-offensive score Texas records a non-offensive score in 25% of their contests by my math. 1 kickoff return TD 2 safeties 3 scoop & scores 6 pick sixes 6 punt return TD *** I write all of this to say, if Texas is able to shutout the Oklahoma defense and special teams from bizarre scoring opportunities, they will win this football game on Saturday. The only path to victory I see for the Sooners is through non-offensive scores.
