Nick Townsend was a beast blocking. A few missed assignments or late to an assignment in the secondary allowed for Texas State to move the ball a bit. Mascoe missed a tackle on sparks early and then gave too much cushion on third down. Jelani was late with deep help a couple times for Kade Phillips. Arch still too often overlooks the “correct” decision and instead forces it where it doesn’t need to be. A couple times he got away with it but he needs to tighten up. Interior lineman struggled as the game went on to open up lanes inside. Sterling Berkhalter looked great. Wingo almost had an exceptional day but just had a great one. If he finds a way to make that catch in the back of the end zone. Smothers and Brown looked like solid, smart running backs. Coleman and Wingo blocked their butts off downfield. Mosely had a quiet day, holding call and dropped ball on a poor pass from Arch. The middle of the field was wide open for Texas State. - Texas needs to shore up the interior line run locking. Assignments in the secondary. Not over pursuing on the edge and allowing qb rush lane when there is man coverage (Simmons). Arch needs to more consistently make the right decision rather than the “would that be awesome if this worked” decision. They need to get set up faster defensively. They couldn’t get set up a couple times with up tempo and were subject to interior runs. lots to work on but that QB was pretty dang good and so were a couple of those receivers.

He won’t make it through the SEC schedule with that game plan.

Concerned about secondary next week. Muschamp going to have to take chances with blitz packages Texas secondary will improve over the season, but next week is worrisome for me

Lot of good and bad. Expected first game. But yeah I don't know if we can pound the rock still. Will know way more Saturday against a top notch team. Arch better for sure, but those throws in coverage will get you killed in a tight game. And expected growing pains with the new defense. But still that pass coverage has to improve this week. All in all just happy no injuries , outside of Cooper.

I thought outside of the interception and one other pass in the first half, Arch looked so much better on the easy passes. I loved how after Texas State sold out for the run, Texas utilized a ton of swing passes to keep their backs productive.
