Week ones are good for overreactions and out of proportion takes that typically don't age well, so read into this as you wish. However, when scouring over the numbers and tape again this morning, there was a clear part of the passing game that felt worse than others – play action passes. The numbers back it up too. *** Arch on Play Action Pass Attempts 10 drop backs 5-10 passing 26 yards 2.6 yards per attempt 1 INT 2 turnover worthy plays Arch on Straight Drop Backs 24 drop backs 12-20 passing 144 yards 7.4 yards per attempts 1 TD 0 turnover worthy plays Perhaps part of the offensive struggles on play action snaps include the average distance of target. On PA snaps, Arch's average distance of target was 11.9, compared to 8.8 on straight drop backs. *** We will see over the next three weeks how this trend continues, but file this one in the growing "Didn't Expect That" folder from the season opener.

OTF Premium Thoughts on Arch Manning
Roy Hinojosa replied to Gerry Hamilton's topic in On Texas Football Forum
What I found most concerning is that Arch's demeanor looked like he wasn't having any fun. There was no confidence or swagger to him, he just looked worried the whole time. The first throw of the game was wide open as you could get, and he turfed it so bad that it barely bounced to his receiver. I don't care how much Sark schemes it, if you can't make wide open throws we either need to trot out someone else or Arch needs to find that swagger in him that we saw last year. -

Good thoughts but the problem was Sark not kicking two field goals. He placed more pressure on his inexperienced offense to chase those six points the in the fourth quarter. If he had those six points, he could have, though not necessary, after Parker’s TD gone for two. Whatever, he did after that TD, on that last drive, he only needs a FG to win the game, not a miracle TD to go to OT. OSU would have had to defend the field differently. Smart people knew this game was a one-score game differential, except Sark. On the road, defending national champs, and he was throwing sure points away. This is not the first time because OU 2023 is another example. -

You don’t get it. When we needed it, he didn’t get it. You don’t understand Ohio State’s defensive game plan, but I get it the nuances of football, the average fan doesn’t get. It appears Sark doesn’t either since he doesn’t understand the importance of kicking field goals. -

After whatcha few clips on YouTube, you’re right. O line had a solid day, until the goal line situations. Sarks gameplan and Arch missing some easy throws and holding the ball too long doomed us. - Today

It is clear that Jeff, Bobby, CJ, Gerry have no clue. Read their posts. Listen to the You Tube channels. I would think Rod should since he played the game. Hopefully, Erwin and Shipley do. However most press people are as brain dead as Sark. None of won’t ask the right question at he press conference. What question is that? Sark, why not take the points? Field goals are not bad, not against very good teams. You left 6 points off the board in a game that was going to be low scoring and a probably a one score game. Guess what? You were chasing those points in the fourth quarter. if you had those six points, you might have gone for two after Parker’s TD, though not necessary because of time. However, you ended up having to get a touchdown at the end of the game whereas a field goal would have been easier to achieve against a salty defense. They would have had to defend the field differently. Your arrogance cost your kids the game. Cost them a decent chance to win the game Instead of needing a miracle to go into overtime. You need to make better decisions. This is not the first time. For example against OU, if you had taken a FG in 2023 instead of running Brooks or throwing a pass to a 160 pound WR behind the line of scrimmage, you could have tried to get a FG on that last drive instead of chasing a TD. Guess what? No one would be recalling that failed goal line attempt. Play to win th game. Tell your kids three points are good points, very good points. You writers, blog guys, at the press conference will get stupid and ask the *** wrong questions about red zone problems because it appears you don’t understand the purpose of the game either instead of asking Sark why did you not take the points in a game on the road against the defending national champs. You had an inexperienced QB, OL, even WRs, and instead of helping them, you put them in the hole. Then after he answers, yada, yada because he is going to give some stupid answer to defend his dumb decisions. Just one writer needs to ask? So your bad decisions not to take the points cost your team the game? I am not crying for a new coach or a new play caller but a coach who understands the basic game of football.

Sark the play caller needs help. I like him as a program bolder a whole lot more. He needs his Johnny Nanson because it’s not working for us to win a championship. His offense is the let down now. The defense hasn’t let us down since probably the CFP in NO. Since then the defense has been very good. Nanson and now Akina have been inserted and give heavy input. PK’s side of the ball is stronger. My respect for him goes daily with the humility he shows. Sark needs someone that will provide input but he has to be willing to receive it. Neal Brown would be a great start.

I think the rattled mechanics and footwork are all mental, so that's the first thing that I'll worry about at Florida: can he handle the expectations better? Can he settle down and acutally GET IN the game? The MORE concerning thing I saw today, because in no way do I wanna believe Arch can't make those easy throws he couldn't make today, is him waiting, on routes over the middle, for guys to GET OPEN instead of throwing them open. Again, this easily could've been a jitters thing, in my mind no way Sark has a whole gameplan centered around that if Arch struggled with it in practice. So it's not a good thing when your QB just can't seem to settle in in big games, but I do think the mental side of handling the pressure of big games gets easier with more reps. I think a lot of today was between the ears rather than talent (even when it comes to going through progressions) -

Arch has always played under center. Taught the game from under center first Sark wants to run more play action from under center … he wants to run the ball effectively from under center to open up play action down the field -

@Gerry Hamilton The only thing that gives me confidence is the throws late in the game that he made. Apart from that, I don't wanna say it, but he looked like DJ Uiagalalei at FSU with those bad mechanics and footwork... Hopefully more reps and time will make him overcome the jitters he had, because that was just simply not the same player we saw last year. The Film Guy on twitter specifically pointed out how bad mechanics, footwork and everything else looked. I think these next 3 games are gonna be crucial for him to really settle in and make the easy throws automatic. -

The 3rd and 5 on the last possession. It’s not a great throw, but Wingo’s reaction is delayed and odd. He leaves his feet. -

That was on Wingo. Feel free to stop your game when the ball is released. There’s ample time to adjust yet he never does. -

I actually think that was Shannon that was open on that play.
