GoHorns1 Posted March 18, 2024 Author Posted March 18, 2024 AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 5/4 University of Texas women's basketball team earned a No. 1 seed and will host the first and second round of the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at Moody Center next week. The Longhorns will take on No. 16 seed Drexel in their first round game on Friday, March 22. The other teams coming to Austin will be No. 8 seed Alabama and No. 9 seed Florida State. Times for the games will be forthcoming. Texas will make their 36th appearance in the NCAA tournament, which is the fourth most among all NCAA DI teams. The last time Texas was a No. 1 seed was 2004. The Longhorns are 30-4 on the season and have won 12 of their last 13 games. Texas has a 15-2 record at Moody Center this season. Texas freshman Madison Booker became the first player in Big 12 women's basketball history to earn the Player of the Year award. Booker also took home Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Big 12 tournament Most Outstanding Player. DeYona Gaston earned the Sixth Player Award. Aaliyah Moore was selected to the All-Big 12 Second Team. Shay Holle, Shaylee Gonzalesand Taylor Jones were named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Holle earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team. Booker also was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. In his fourth season in Austin, head coach Vic Schaefer has a record of 106-31. Schaefer has guided the Longhorns to a pair of Big 12 tournament titles and a regular season championship as well as two Elite Eight appearances. In 2023 Schaefer was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year. Schaefer is a semifinalist for the 2024 Naismith Coach of the Year award. Quote
