Aspann85 Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago JSN just signed a 4 yr $168m contract. It wasn’t long ago that it was insane when a QB got to $20m/yr and now WRs are at $40m+/yr while the average man still make something like $60-80,000/yr. Just crazy where some of these sports are headed. 2 Quote

Dread-headed Texan Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago I gave up on professional sports a long time ago. College has their portal mess that needs to be cleaned up, but it still makes me feel something and brings me joy. Quote
ArizonaLonghorn Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago (edited) I'd just point out that salaries are going up because the NFL's revenues are going up quickly, so the salary cap keeps rising. I'm OK with sharing it with the multi-millionaire athletes instead of the billionaire owners keeping it, though it would be nice to see more of the revenue benefits trickle down to fans in the form of cheaper in-stadium food or cheaper parking or whatever to improve the fan experience. As for JSN, that guy deserves his contract. He was amazingly productive at his position and his team just won the Super Bowl. It's the guys who get paid big bucks and don't produce who bother me more (especially the whiners). Jets are paying $48 million this year to two QBs who are no longer on their roster lol. And then there are Kyler and Tua ... Cards and Dolphins are eating close to $150 million in dead cap space for those two. Situations like those bother me more than a younger player like JSN getting paid on a second contract. Edited 10 hours ago by ArizonaLonghorn 4 Quote

Per the CBA, the NFL has to pay a certain percentage of its revenue to the players (and teams have a minimum salary cap that they can’t go below) so when the league’s revenue increases, so does the player’s salaries. I find it interesting how the football leagues make billions, but still a certain faction of fans would prefer to see the players get paid little to nothing in comparison to those billions. 🤔 3 Quote
Aspann85 Posted 8 hours ago Author Posted 8 hours ago No one said anything negative about the players making more. It’s just crazy that we are in a time where there is THAT much money flowing through the sports. I like the idea stated above of having it trickle down to fans with lower prices since most of the money is TV or ad revenue and not tickets and concessions though those obviously play a role. The curve of how quickly the money is going up is what I was referring to. The last 10 years have been crazy exponential compared to the previous 50-60. Quote

Also the Portal mess you speak of allowed Texas to bring in several elite starters that likely has propelled us to a NC contender. Edited 7 hours ago by MBHORNSFAN Quote

We would have been national champ contenders without portal additions. There’s only one position group that looks to be substantially better than it would otherwise be without the impact of the portal. And that’s conceivable that the two best players are homegrown. Biles is a top addition, but it’s not as though Lefau was insignificant. Now, if you say took us to the top of the list, maybe. Quote

We picked up 2 OL starters, both RB starters, several DT and the best WR. Without all that we are no way close to a NC contender. 1 Quote

Seriously, find me 5 other teams with a core anywhere near that. The draft will tell, but there are few teams every year that produce 3 1st round picks. Then you got Wingo, January, Terry, Baker, TyAnthony Smith. Landon Jackson, Umeozulu at DE. Robertson. There’s no guarantee that a homegrown guy doesn’t take the other guard spot. Williams was solid recruit. Littleton, Black, Phillips, Roberson, Niblett as PR. I know exactly who we picked up and who we lost. Five of the top 10 teams from last year lose their QB. Miami and Tech lose much of their DLine and/or OLine. Similar for Indiana. Ohio State loses a bunch on defense. A&Ms Oline is gone. We were very competitive last year. With the most difficult schedule. With injuries. And we lost fewer high end guys than the other likely contenders. But sure, the team that’s been a top 3-5 team over the past 3 seasons would not have been a competitor. Quote

If you think this team was a contender without all the portal adds I really don't know what to tell you. We picked up at least 6-7 starters from the portal. Quote
