whereiend Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago (edited) I've seen some speculation about the NCAA potentially making 5 to play 5 take effect immediately for last year's seniors. This would mean another year for guys like Jordan Pope and Weaver. Has there been any discussion of this? If it happened, would Texas have room for any of these guys at this point or would they have to portal? Of course it would make more sense to have it take effect next year, but you never know... Moderators Hank South Posted 15 hours ago Moderators Posted 15 hours ago It hasn't been determined whether or not it would go into effect immediately. Texas has two roster spots open after today but would likely need another big, and probably doesn't have the necessary NIL for either unless they want to take a pay cut. If somehow it gets passed and all these guys have an extra year I would think most would have to pick another school with teams trying to finalize their rosters under the current rules. 2 Quote
HonkEm Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago Good info from both of you. With the NCAA dragging its feet, it’s hard to know if this hits immediately or not. If seniors really do get another year, that’s a ton of roster chaos. Texas having two spots is nice, but with the need for a big + limited NIL, it’s tough to see many of those guys fitting unless they’re willing to take less. Most would probably have to hit the portal anyway. Quote
Burnt Orange Horn Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Why would NIL be limited for a big talent?? 🤷🏿♂️ 🤘🏻🤘🏼🤘🤘🏽🤘🏾🤘🏿 Quote

I just don't know if Texas could make that work with the guys they've signed out of the portal. 3 Quote

Does the roster count include a spot for Swaim if he decides to return? 2 Quote

Why? if he doesn't get the news he wants he could come back, his words. you can't sit here and act like if that happens you wouldn't want him. Not far fetched he doesn't get a higher drafter grade this year with how deep this draft is. 1 Quote
Jerky Posted 20 minutes ago Posted 20 minutes ago Many players actually playing 5 or more seasons is due mostly to the extra covid years. The covid waivers distorted things but that is winding down and will be over soon. Unfortunately the upcoming HS prospects did not have as many open spots/scholarships due to the wide spread covid waivers allowing many upper class sticking around for a 5th and 6th year. For many decades, BYU has had older players due to missionary work. This will continue. It is not like mass injuries happen to foes when teams play an older BYU team. It is not a safety issue in my opinion. BYU is good and has an advantage but the advantage of older players is not insurmountable. So it is not a competition fairness issue either in my opinion. Believe it would be a shame that the few players that get injured for 3 or more seasons will not get an extra medical redshirt under this rule. This small group of long time injured players will likely get litigated and the myopic, arbitrary position may not stand. An exception should be granted for the few players that lose most of their seasons due to injuries. Quote
HelloThere Posted 15 minutes ago Posted 15 minutes ago I think the bigger issue that needs to be addressed is the age of college student athletes, particularly in Olympic sports. I just don’t think 27-29 year olds should be freshman in college athletics even if they have never been in college before. That is Olympic age and the difference in body maturity with 18 year olds and 28 year olds is significant. It is definitely hurting high school recruiting in distance. Isn’t 24 or 25 a reasonable number to limit it? Quote

Don't think so because Swain isn't coming back. Keeps getting slotted higher and higher in mocks. Texas is recruiting like he's not coming back. Quote
