For those wondering why they took the Texas Tech outfielder in the first round, this is why. You save on your first-round pick's bonus so you can move some of your bonus pool money down the line.

It would be a pretty significant blow if Texas loses Peterson.

It's a worthwhile gamble for the Astros. Unless there's a rule I'm unaware of regarding competitive balance picks, the Astros will get the pick back in 2027 if Peterson doesn't sign. So either they sign him, or they get the pick back (which they only got in the first place because Framber Valdez signed with the Tigers in free agency) next year.

Based on mock drafts and pre-draft rankings, it still feels like he went lower than expected. So this has got to be a small win for us, right?
