Highest Ranked Games in DKR History

Recommended Posts

I'll go year by year but I'm also only listing top 10 matchups for this. Assuming 2024 Georgia/Texas being a 1/2 matchup or a top 5 matchup that will be the most recent.

2019: 9 Texas vs 6 LSU
2008: 1 Texas vs 6 Oklahoma St
2007: 2 Texas vs 1 Ohio St
2005: 2 Texas vs 10 Texas Tech
1996: 6 Texas vs 9 Notre Dame
1980: 10 Texas vs 6 Arkansas
1978: 8 Texas vs 3 Arkansas
1970: 1 Texas vs 4 Arkansas
1964: 1 Texas vs 8 Arkansas
1962: 1 Texas vs 7 Arkansas
1950: 7 Texas vs 1 SMU
1949: 10 Texas vs 9 Rice

Once you get to the early 1930s and 1920s it gets harder to find information but the above according to my quick research are the biggest games played in DKR history involving two top 10 rankings. There were a handful or more games with either Texas or the opponent ranked 11th. 1984 Texas vs Penn St a 1v4 matchup was a neutral site game.

Remember when Arkansas had great teams? Yeah, I wasn’t alive then either.

LOL - I'm so old (as are a handful of others here) that I remember the 1969 "Game of the Century".  # 1 Texas vs # 2 Arkansas, President Nixon in the stands, Texas rallied from a 14-0 deficit to win late 15-14, keyed by a fourth down 44 yard pass (the forward pass had recently been invented).

I wasn't even a student at Texas then (I came 4 years later for grad school) but I still remember that game.  According to Wikipedia (so who knows how accurate) "With a Nielsen rating of 52.1 (a 74 share), this was and remains as of 2023, the highest TV rating in American football history, college or professional."

I'm right there with you... I was a high school freshman in 1969 and followed the Longhorns with my father that magical burnt orange season. He took me to the OU game at the State Fair ( and told me his father had taken him to the State Fair in 1936 when he was ten years old ) and the '36 Fair celebrated the Texas Centennial and the Fairgrounds sported the new Art Deco exhibit buildings.

Later that season, we went back to the Cotton Bowl to see Texas smash SMU who played their home games in the Cotton Bowl Stadium. I was taken with how the Fairgrounds were empty for the SMU game because the State Fair had ended right after the Texas -OU game. There was a big crowd, but not a sellout for SMU and the Texas fans far outnumbered the Pony fans. Oh, and no Fletcher's Corny Dogs at the SMU game.

We later went to Fort Worth to see the Horns demolish TCU. I remember Texas 69 and TCU maybe 7. Steve Worster had a great game at Amon Carter Stadium.

We caught the Baylor game in person and watched the Longhorns best the Aggies on TV at Thanksgiving.

Just as you described, I watched "the Big Shootout" against #2 Arkansas in Fayetteville on TV in the living room with my parents. At the dinner table I told the family I was going to college at Texas. I followed through and was the first in my family to earn BA and MA degrees. UT 1976 and 1978.

Street to Peschel on fourth down in Fayetteville made a big impression on me and I never regretted attending the University of Texas. Hook 'Em!

Think you missed Arkansas 1964.

I remember it well. It's a big deal when the president's helicopter lands just outside the stadium before kickoff, and then he comes into the winner's locker room with his own #1 plaque to present. And oh yea, the teams are ranked #1 and #2. The Horns played terrible for 3 quarters and woke up early in the 4th quarter.

True, and I didn't say it was ...

I realize this thread is about DKR games but I simply was responding to a post from one of our younger viewers who wrote "Remember when Arkansas had great teams? Yeah, I wasn’t alive then either."  And Arky did have great teams for a few years back then.

I see.  More than anything though I was looking to joke with you on our age.  I watched that game and thought it was the greatest ever at the time...until seeing the VY national championship game.

Freddy's PI tackle of Burnett saved that game for Texas. He must have had no strength in that leg which was removed a week later.
