Quinn a Checkdown Merchant?

Recommended Posts

He can't throw the deep ball.  That has been painfully obvious to anyone that watches him objectively. He throws to an area not to his receiver.  Since the beginning of last year and through the UTSA game this year he operated the intermediate game at a high level.  You can win doing that.  If that doesn't turn around early in the Vandy game.  A change is needed imo.

Crazy to think after a horrible decade all it took was a check down merchant to bring texas back to relevancy

Sorry but Quinn isn’t the only reason Texas is in a better place. They’re in a better place because of better development, good recruiting, and good transfer portal decisions. Quinn is an average QB.

Totally agree.  Quinn was elite in the intermediate to deep middle.  He and Worthy were deadly with deep crossing patterns.  Not sure where that’s gone, but it has completely vanished.

He's found Golden there a couple times but, to your point, not at the same level.

Check downs are fine. A staple of good offensive football. It’s the telegraphed, late check down to the flat that’s getting old. Opponents are driving on them, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see one taken the other way in the near future if Quinn doesn’t back defenses off in coverage with completions down the field.

The quick game, screens, check downs and bombs can make for a pretty darn solid college offense. Or, if not bombs,  legitimate targets 15-20 yards down the field. Take away that and defenses are largely playing within 10 yards of the LOS with impunity because our QB can’t connect deep or won’t stay in the pocket long enough to attempt a throw.
