RIP

There is a great story both he and Colin Powell told, consistent with each other, but from differing perspectives. If I can find an accurate printing of it I will put the url here.  For those of you who are history buffs, during the Clinton Admin the two of them went to visit the dictator of Haiti on a diplomatic mission.  Each told what happened.

Carter was a terrific citizen as an ex-President, and there aren't many who could have claimed that.

Set this country back a decade.   Let’s not pretend he isn’t one of the if not the worst presidents of all time. As a human being RIP and rest well. Still.  Screw him as a president.

Mods, I suggest you lock this thread now before it blows up with comments about every evil of Republican administrations for the last 40 years.

Yeah here we gooooo (Dak Prescott voice).

In all seriousness, it was only a matter of not if but when this would begin.  This thread has to be locked.  RIP Jimmy Carter.

Nobody here can defend Carter's presidency.  The Democrats didn't like him much either and tried to primary him.  If Edward Kennedy weren't such a bad candidate then I don't think Carter would have been able to run for president again in 1980.

Having said that I don't think any of us could say that Carter was a bad man.  He was the product of a racist Democrat Party and he is one of the men that changed the party to inclusiveness.  To be a white Democrat in Georgia in the 1960s and run for the civil rights of all men was a brave act.  Carter was also married for 77 years which I think is very admirable.

Carter was a lifelong opponent of capital punishment.  Since our federal government and our state governments have executed many innocent people I appreciated Carter's work in in this area.  I say this as a conservative Republican who doesn't want government to have the power to kill people.

Carter did a lot of good work with the Habitat for Humanity charity to help build homes for people in a way that did not use tax dollars. I don't know anybody who would disagree with this effort.

Carter also spent a great deal of time fighting for fair elections around the world which helps spread democracy and freedom.

I didn't appreciate Carter's politics and I would never vote for him but anybody can see that he was a great man who lived a remarkable life.  RIP Jimmy Carter.
