He inherited absolutely nothing after the program's implosion due to Sampson making a lot of phone calls. This is the non-portal era, so it was like Drew having to rebuild Baylor from the ground up. Crean got IU to the NCAA in his fourth year and made the tournament 4 times in five years, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen 3 times. Then future long time NBA star OG Anunoby blew out a knee in January, 2017. IU went 4-10 the rest of the way, missed the tournament, and Crean was canned, but not before the Indiana AD decided IU would not host an NIT game because it would "devalue" Assembly Hall. Well, you've had two tournament appearances and one tournament win since then, so maybe Assembly Hall's value is another historical relic. Nebraska is a great comparison. Nobody has been able to be a success there in quite a while. Quote

Certainly possible, or they can raise their NIL to keep their coach. He had Iowa State in the top five until a recent losing streak. Texas can only offer a higher salary, which would be matched. They can’t offer a built in fan base. Anything is possible, and of course if they do move on, it doesn’t hurt to reach out. Quote

And then it becomes, why do I leave a rabid fan base and a top five team to come to a football school? Iowa State will match any offer. Donovan is too old, unless Texas is looking for say a five year coach. I like McCollum a lot but if CDC makes a move he needs to get it right. No, they announced an extension. Contract details were not released (because I don't think the contract had been prepared). I don't think Iowa State can "match any offer." He will end up in the Big Ten or SEC because that's where the money is. If Terry is let go, of course Texas should get involved. 1 Quote

You talked about Nebraska football.... They fired Frank Solich because he wasn't Tom Osborne, and they've found no one like Osborne since. I grew up watching Big Ten ball and IU was different/special. Knight actually elevated it and kept it consistently nationally relevant. This status is not a given, even though a handful of schools have the fan base interest to keep it relevant. Quote

Curiously, though, Matt Campbell also signed an extension in December. Details of that also have yet to be disclosed. Of course these days in the coaching world, an on paper contract is only worth the stone tablet it's chiseled on. 2 Quote

Of course these days in the coaching world, an on paper contract is only worth the stone tablet it's chiseled on. Yes, dated the same day as the ISU release and tweet. If he signed, why not say that? The school might not put out the terms but the media surely would, as that's basically the first question a reporter would ask. (What are the terms? What are the buyouts?) I think the last extension was Ot-friendly -- he owes much less to leave than ISU owes if he is fired. Also, it's been almost two months and no details. I don't think the deal is done, and if it is done, he hasn't actually signed it. Quote

MarkInAustin Posted February 7 Posted February 7 I do not think it is fair to assume that Texas will become a BIG $$ player with hoops NIL. It could happen, but it has not happened yet. And that might be a stumbling block in any search process. I am especially interested in the thoughts of those of you who have been close to the program [I was, in the oughts, but not now]. Quote
